Bike jumps

  • Peaceful site for mountain biking fans in North Wales
  • Next to Coed y Brenin bike trails with exclusive MTB jumps line onsite
  • Easy access from the A470, with gorgeous views of the Rhinog Mountains
If Eryri (aka Snowdonia National Park) has a heart, it’s probably somewhere around Bike Ranch Snowdonia. This Gwynedd site is about five minutes’ drive from Trawsfynydd, so it’s about as central as it could be within the park, and for the outdoor activity fans, it's in the mecca of mountain biking in north Wales. Handily, it’s also just off the A470 – so you’ll be able to get out and about to more far-flung corners speedily enough without having to face too many little winding lanes. That said, you don't need to roam far to get going on the outdoorsy activities that have no doubt enticed you to the area. Those who like to explore on two wheels are well served, as there's an exclusive mountain bike jumps line on site and the trails of the Coed y Brenin Forest Park are just next door. Llyn Trawsfynydd is about three miles away for watersports and fishing – and of course there are lots of options around for walkers as well… However you choose to roam, you’ll be coming back to a peaceful site on a working sheep farm, where you’ll be able to soak up the gorgeous views of the Rhinog Mountains with a soundtrack of the sheep bleating in neighbouring fields. It’s a laidback pick-your-own-pitch setup here, with heaps of space to choose from across three wildflower-filled fields (and guest numbers are kept on the low side so you’ll never be bunched up) and secure bike storage to lock up your wheels safely. That laidback approach also means a green light for barbecues and campfires – along with a warm welcome for any kids and dogs you’d like to bring along. Simple facilities include toilets, hot showers, a washing-up area and a camping shelter with a long table where you can serve up meals in the event of the sun not shining on the picnic tables.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked: Really great site, quiet and clean. We booked the morning of our trip as it was very last minute and luckily they had space. Driving from London we were due to arrive very late (10:30pm) but called ahead and explained, the guys were very understanding and still let us come in and pitch up so long as we were quiet. There's lenty of space to park up and getting back into local towns is really easy. Facilities were great, toilets and showers were clean and working with no issues, perfect after a long day hiking. Easy access to drinking water right by the campsite was nice to have. We stayed in the Rhinog view field and the view of the sunset through the gap in the mountains as we sat having dinner was fantastic.

Disliked: Due to the location of the site there's a surprising amount of road noise through the night which was a little disruptive for sleep but completely understand this isn't within the control of the campsite! Just something to consider if you're a particularly light sleeper. Pitches aren't assigned which I like but the Rhinog view field isn't the most level, getting there early enough to find a level spot would be recommended. The top of the field by the cars seemed to be the flattest part but it's minor really. Otherwise cannot fault the site!

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked: Really nice family-run campsite. Jumps are excellent and beginner friendly! My five year old was stoked he rolled over (and even jumped) them. The dark sky around the area isn't to be missed and the facilities are all top notch too. Great place to stay all round.

Riders Barn bunkhouse

Liked: Very nice place. Very quiet

Disliked: Toilets without soap, hot water and hand dryers. There were paper towel dispensers but empty. No one cleaned the toilets. Bathrooms without lighting - the only light was in the showers. Lots of cobwebs and spiders everywhere. Contact with the owners was very difficult - there was no one in the office. You had to look for them.

Local attractions

Snowdonia is all about outdoor activities galore, of course – and you’ll have plenty to choose from. As well as all the local bike trails, walks and watersports, there are lots of adrenaline-boosters on offer at Zip World Llechwedd (25 minutes’ drive), including ziplines, underground trampolining and a challenging adventure course through the old slate caverns. For a gentler day out, perhaps you’d prefer a ride on the Ffestiniog & Welsh Highland Railways (20 minutes) or a trip to meet the Snowdonia Alpacas (10 minutes). There are plenty of challenging hikes around if you want them – but also places for a more peaceful stroll, such as Abergwynant Woods (15 minutes). And of course, this particular location also allows you easy access to the coast – perhaps for a day on the beach in Barmouth (25 minutes), a visit to the mighty seafront fortress Harlech Castle (half an hour) or a day spent exploring the colourful buildings and pretty gardens of Portmeirion (25 minutes.
