  • Pop-up wild camping on five acres of private woodland in Gwynedd
  • Porthmadog 10 minutes’ drive and Zip World Llechwedd 25 minutes
  • Bird hide, wildlife ponds and woodland walks; pub five minutes’ drive
Set in a five-acre Gwynedd woodland on the edge of Eryri National Park, Coed Obry is a back-to-nature pop-up site with wild pitches tucked under the canopy of trees. Wild and untamed it may be but never fear, it’s only 25 minutes’ walk/five minutes’ drive from shops, pubs and takeaways in Penrhyndeudraeth village. If you need a major stocking up, seaside Porthmadog is 10 minutes away by car and has several large supermarkets. The site is easily accessed off the A4085, and then it’s a 100-metre walk along a woodland track from the car park to the pitches, which are all totally off grid. There are few creature comforts here, except a compost loo, covered shelter for alfresco dining and a picnic table, but you get stunning sunsets from the camping zone, and there is plenty of flora and fauna to see – you can start by watching out for birds from the hide by the wildlife pond. You (and any accompanying four-legged friends) can also walk freely in the woodland, planted specifically to increase local diversity. If you’d like more challenging outdoor action, the woods are also used as a base for bushcraft and canoe courses by Snowdonia Outdoors, which you can participate in for an extra cost.

Local attractions

When a day at the beach is beckoning, Porthmadog (10 minutes’ drive) is the gateway to sandy expanses like Black Rock Sands (15 minutes) on the Cambrian Coast. It also has a lively yacht marina to have a nose around, and you can catch a vintage steam train to chug along the Welsh Highland Heritage Railway to Caernarfon. Once there, you may like to tour the castle or check out cool art galleries. Another scenic train journey can be taken on the Ffestiniog Railway from Penrhyndeudraeth Station (25 minutes’ walk) up to the former slate-mining village of Blaenau Ffestiniog. Here you can try out mountain bike trails at Antur Stiniog Bike Park, or whizz over a disused slate quarry by zipwire at Zip World Llechwedd. Birdlovers will appreciate a chance to see rare raptors feeding at Bywyd Gwyllt Glaslyn Wildlife - Ospreys (five minutes’ drive), and anyone with an appreciation of architecture will love the eccentric bell towers, colourful villas and fountain-filled piazza at Portmeirion (10 minutes), the Italianate folly/village of designed by Sir Clough Williams-Ellis in 1926.
