  • Quiet campsite with Eryri views 15 minutes’ drive from Betws-y-Coed
  • Adventure Parc Snowdonia and Zip World Llechwedd half an hour’s drive
  • Lakeside pitches behind a traditional pub with dining and a games room
Like the sound of holidaying under canvas with a backdrop of Eryri National Park (Snowdonia) peaks? Haste ye to the Y Giler Arms, a traditional country inn just off the A5 (a former coaching route), for tucked behind the pub is a camping field overlooking a lake and edged by the meanders of the River Merddwr. For exercise junkies, this peaceful spot is close to the outdoor-sports hub of Betws-y-Coed (15 minutes’ drive). If you’d rather stay put and drift around on site, the pub opens every evening, where you can be sure of a warm Welsh welcome along with local real ales and home-cooked food served in the lakeside restaurant. Hot breakfasts are also available – just be sure to order yours from the bar the night before – and there are plenty of distractions if the kids get restless, from a darts board and pool table to a variety of board games for you to borrow. Any accompanying dogs are welcome in the public bar and games room, but must be kept on a lead and under close control at all times on the camping field, as it is surrounded by farmland with lots of grazing sheep. And finally, a few practicalities: the site comprises two acres of level pitches, with easy access for towing vehicles. Facilities include modern shower blocks (one with disabled access), a washing-up area, electric hook-ups and water points.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked: Nice quiet campsite, restaurant/bar and toilets close by. The one member of staff that we seen was very friendly.

Disliked: I know this is somewhat out of the owners hands but I have to say the bugs. Our tent was absolutely covered and they were getting inside too. So much so that I ended up sleeping in the car. I would suggest a better lighting system of some-kind to prevent the bugs from people’s tents. Another factor, which isn’t necessarily down to the owner, but more so the messy campsite users… but they left the toilets in such a state. Only adding this point in to suggest check ups more regularly in the toilets. If the bug situation was sorted i would definitely suggest upping the price of stay. :)

Liked: The site is great, we had a tent and the field was perfect. There are 4 shower rooms and a separate WC with 2 toilets. Site was clean. Pub on site is great, food was delicious. Great location for what we had planned (zipworld) Overall cannot complain and will be back again x

Disliked: Nothing... Few negative reviews about only 2 toilets/showers (this is the new block) opposite the pod/cabin there are a further 2 showers and 4 toilets. Clearly people didn't look!
