  • Peaceful mid-Wales tent pitches on the banks of Fachwen Pool
  • A 10-minute drive to Newtown; 25 minutes to Powis Castle
  • Fishing and woodland walks on site; campfires and barbecues welcome
Bring your walking boots, your binoculars, your fishing kit, your camera, your paint palette… the Powys tent pitches at Pool Cottage Camping are surrounded by the sort of gorgeous scenery that’s ripe for both active and artistic endeavours. This pretty site is on the banks of Fachwen Pool, with lovely watery views right there by the pitches. It’s a wonderful habitat for wildlife so keep an eye out for the families of hares and pheasants that live here, along with visiting wild birds. Fishing is permitted if you’ve bought a permit from the fishing shop in Newtown (10 minutes’ drive, and also the place to stock up on your barbecue supplies or find a pub meal). You’re welcome to take strolls through the woods, perhaps collecting fallen twigs for your campfire – or even whittling a Welsh love spoon if you’ve got the right skills. Guests can set up camp there among the trees too, but please no climbing or cutting down branches. Making the most of your time in mid-Wales should be straightforward, as it’s easy to find places to get out for a walk, a bike ride (including intrepid downhill mountain bike trails) or a bit more wildlife-spotting. Heritage train rides and a castle are close by too if you’d like a quieter time, and Newtown has a cluster of museums and arts venues. This peaceful spot in the hamlet of Aberhafesp is a thoroughly rural location, so you’ll need to bring a torch and leave any dogs at home (because of livestock in surrounding fields). The facilities stretch just to portable toilets and there’s no access to hot water. Because of the terrain, unfortunately this site is unlikely to be suitable for wheelchair users or those who are unsteady on their feet.

Local attractions

How might you like to see the local scenery? At a slow pace on a local walk, perhaps, or on horseback from a local riding centre – or maybe at higher speed on the mountain bike trails at Caersws (10 minutes’ drive), which has an uplift to get you going on the downhill routes. If you’re big on bird-spotting or wildlife photography, you may like to book in a session at Falconry Experience Wales (15 minutes). You may also get some great shots on walks around the gardens and nature reserve at Gregynog Hall (10 minutes) or a ride on the Welshpool & Llanfair Light Railway (20 minutes), a heritage line running through some stunning scenery. For a spot of history, take a trip to the remnants of Dolforwyn Castle (15 minutes) or strike out to the rather grander Powis Castle and Garden (25 minutes), extensively remodelled over the centuries and with spectacular gardens to wander around.
