  • Family-run Mid Wales farm site and wildlife haven just off the A44
  • Llandrindod Wells 10 minutes’ drive; Hay-on-Wye 40 minutes
  • Local pub with beer garden accessed from the back of the site
Stopping over for a night, or in need of a base for a longer break meandering around Mid Wales? Either way, there’s a warm welcome at Dolswydd Caravan Park, in a handy spot just off the A44, 10 minutes’ drive from Llandrindod Wells. This family-run site is on the edge of a traditional working farm with a backdrop of open common land and the splendid Welsh hills behind. Perhaps unsurprisingly, it’s something of a wildlife haven, with regular visitors including red kites, otters, woodpeckers and hares, as well as the swans who stop by daily. Getting out and about in the local countryside is a cinch from here – walkers can hit major trails like Glyndŵr’s Way and the Offa’s Dyke Path (the visitor’s centre for the latter is in Knighton, a 20-minute drive away), or find quiet local lanes to wander along. Golf, horse riding, canoeing, archery and climbing are among the other activities available nearby, and there’s fishing next door to the site on the River Ithon. Modern facilities on site include bathrooms with toilets and showers, plus a washing machine. A short (500-metre) walk away through the back of the site is the local pub, which serves good home-cooked food and has a lovely riverside beer garden.

What customers say

This peaceful, well-kept site offers great value. Guests loved the clean facilities, friendly owners, and beautiful riverside setting with nice walks. The nearby pub is also a hit. While most found it excellent, some noted dated facilities and few showers. Management is aware and working on accessibility.

Liked Good sized pitches
Lovely river running along the site

Disliked Shower pressure was rather weak.
Cleanliness of the washing up facilities could've been better (I understand its caused by campers not tidying after themselves)
Mens toilets had a oddur and wasn't most pleasant smell

The showers can get air locks in them, if you had of let us know we would have come and sorted this for you.
I personally cleaned the washing up area 3 times the day/night of your stay. I would love to be but cannot be there all of the time to clean up after everyone.
I also cleaned the gents 3 times that day. Unfortunately given the heat and volume of visitors the gents toilets will have a slight smell in between cleans. Someone had also stolen the air freshner, slightly strange thing to steal and very annoying.

Liked This is a really beautiful site, his world laid out The pitches have plenty of space, and you have all the facilities that you need. We were parked by the river, the tranquil pleasant atmosphere totally added to the experience. Like everything about this place wonderful staff, clean accessible immunities, and a great location.

Liked Spacious pitch but it is predominantly taken up by permanent touring caravans only a few left for walk ins.
Showers were warm but the pressure was very poor. Overall a satisfactory stay the Angel inn at the end of the site has great food and very welcoming. Booked online never saw any staff on arrival or during our stay

Disliked Showers

From the manager: Thank you for visiting.
We are sorry that you didn't see us. We normally send a confirmation email, upon receiving a booking, but were not in the office to do this at such a short notice booking. You had booked late on a Friday and must have been at the Severn Arms next door when we came down to the site to do our nightly checks. We do like to see our visitors, but cannot always and visitors usually ring if they have booked late to find out which pitch has been allocated to them (pitch up do state that you should call on arrival).
Regarding the water pressure, if you move the dial to a different position, it usually corrects. You could also have called us at any time and we would have come down and sorted this for you.

Liked Plenty of room for our tent and water and electric right next to us. Extremely clean site with the shower block and rubbish being cleaned quite a few times a day.

Disliked Only 1 shower in the shower block, could do with another one or two so you don't have to wait for one to become free. No wifi for younger children

From the manager: Thank you for visiting. We are pleased you enjoyed your stay.
We do state that we do not have wifi on our profile and on the confirmation email that we send on booking.
We do take on board your comments about the shower. Most of our visitors have their own facilities. We have looked into putting in more but it is not viable for us to do this. There is never more than one person waiting at any time even on the busiest bank holidays.

Amazing site. Owners friendly and helpful. Will be visiting again

Local attractions

On the outskirts of Rhayader, the Red Kite Feeding Station - Gigrin Farm (20 minutes’ drive) features several hides (including one 10 metres above the ground, for great aerial photography) from where you can gaze in awe at the spectacle of hundreds of red kites swooping on a feeding field to catch juicy meat morsels. Check out the lush displays of azaleas and maple trees at Hergest Croft Gardens (20 minutes), where you can also take a stroll through a colourful orchard and among giant rhododendrons. Afterwards, drive a little farther to the Small Breeds Farm Park (25 minutes), which is home to rabbits and guinea pigs, plus exotic birds like kookaburras. Hay-on-Wye (40 minutes) is renowned globally for its literary festival, which takes place in late spring. However, at any other time of year, you can still soak up the literary vibe by visiting the town’s many bookshops. If you happen to be in Hay on a Thursday, the weekly market is a top place to stock up on local produce.
