  • Adults-only glamping near Brecon, with Black Mountains views
  • A 10-minute drive to the Taff Trail; Crickhowell Castle half an hour
  • Cosy glamping pods with kitchenette and woodburner
Romantic weekend? Monmouthshire hiking? Cycling jaunt? 68 Degrees West, in the village of Cradoc, makes a fine base for any and all of these. It's a peaceful luxury glamping spot with views of the Black Mountains and Pen y Fan, and close to the historic market town of Brecon. Golfers, this is a fine spot for you too, as 68 Degrees West is right next door to Cradoc’s championship golf course – play a round, knock some balls around on the driving range, or head down to the clubhouse for a drink and bite to eat. It’s also less than 50 minutes’ drive to Ryder Cup host Celtic Manor. Pet-free and designed for adults only, the cedar-clad glamping pods are fully insulated and heated with woodburners for any chillier days. Bed linen and towels are provided, and tea, coffee and sugar are left in the kitchenettes for your much-needed arrival cuppa, along with other useful bits and pieces like washing-up liquid. If you run out of essentials, you’re bound to find them in Brecon (10 minutes’ drive), where there are pubs and takeaways to keep you fed and watered.

Camping pod (hot tub)

Liked: The location was so quiet and peaceful with fantastic views. Close to Brecon so it wasn’t a trek to a shop. The toilet and shower facilities were spotless and well maintained. The pods were very cosy with tea, coffee and firewood provided. The fire added to said coziness as did the provision of towels and bedding. Everything you needed was provided in the kitchen area (washing up liquid, cutlery etc). Tv with dvd player plus dvds also provided - it was really nice not to have channels or very good wifi as you literally ‘got away from everything’ which was exactly what we needed.

Disliked: The bed was the worst thing I’ve ever slept on in my life - it would have been comfier to sleep outside on the grass! Really not good for anyone with any form of physical condition! You are sleeping on a table top with for strips of foam, 1-2 inches thick! These sleeping arrangements seriously need to be re looked at as this is the only thing that would put me off returning and I’m sure it has for other people. One gas ring wouldn’t stay lit and the fridge was tiny (don’t take a 4 pint bottle of milk!). The hot tub was set to 40 so we were unable to use it the first day due to it being too hot. These are really little complaints though that didn’t really matter. THAT BED however, really did matter but at least the hot tub could loosen you up again (when it wasn’t too hot!). It felt it was overpriced considering I had 2 very bad nights sleeps! I would stay again and recommend to a friend if the sleeping arrangements were changed.

Liked: We had a fantastic time, we feel so relaxed now. it was my partners birthday and our 6 year anniversary so was just what we needed. We defiantly would go back

Disliked: our cabin didn’t have a toilet so we would re-book one with a toilet and shower although it wasn’t a issue as the toilets/showers were very clean

Local attractions

Hiking and mountain-biking trails – easy to challenging – are all around you in the Brecon Beacons National Park, with a gentle route along the Monmouthshire and Brecon Canal towpath (10 minutes’ drive) for anyone sticking to the flat. Brecon also marks the start of the Taff Trail, a popular walking and cycling path that heads right to Cardiff Bay (around 5.5 hours’ biking). The area is ideal for horse lovers too, with 600 miles of bridle paths and tracks accessible from Ellsemere Riding Centre, while complete novices can take lessons at Cantref - Adventure Farm in South Wales (both 20 minutes’ drive), where you can also cosy up to cuddly goats and lambs (in season). For a slice of Welsh history, clamber up to the crumbling clifftop ruins of Carreg Cennen (an hour), visit the remains of medieval Crickhowell Castle (half an hour) and learn more about the area at The Royal Welsh Regimental Museum (10 minutes) in Brecon.
