  • A 10-minute drive from Falkirk, 30 from Glasgow and 55 from Edinburgh
  • Free-range egg sales
Fancy a bonnie old time in bonnie Scotland? Make haste for Bonnybridge Eco Camping and Glamping, a family-friendly site 10 minutes’ drive from Falkirk. Eco-conscious guests can rest assured their carbon footprints are minimal at this site on a family-run livery yard. But don’t think that off-grid means basic – the site runs on solar panels and wind turbines, so there's no need to wave goodbye to tech for stays, and there’s rainwater harvesting for showers and washing up (plus a drinking fountain to help you stay hydrated). For even more eco-conscious hols, minimising car journeys by spending loads of time on site is easily possible too, as nature fixes can be had by meeting the friendly resident Shetland ponies or by wandering the fields (keeping a lookout for newts, toads, butterflies, pheasants and deer). When it comes time to satisfy hungers, there’s a small shop selling free-range eggs and basic essentials in the office eco pod, and the shops of Bonnybridge village are a 10-minute bike ride away. If a break from self-catering is needed, make the trip into Falkirk (10 minutes’ drive or a 25-minute cycle) to try out some of the restaurants or cafés.

Camping pod (no pets)

Liked: Facilities Location Eco friendly On site food/takeaway option

Disliked: Loud motorbikes and late arrivals setting up after 10pm. Slamming doors and being rowdy whilst setting up for the night. Their noises set the surrounding dogs to keep barking and then the little ones woke up.

The Paddock primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked: Fabulous views. Very clean shower and toilet block. Very friendly helpful staff. When our tent blew down they gave us all sorts of help: use of one of their premium tents, use of a trolley, help moving our gear.

Disliked: Windy , exposed site. A standpipe for water would be useful. Even if is non drinking water, it would save having to use the bottled water for cooking.

Liked: The peace, the friendliness, the open space, the view!, the fire pits and picnic benches, the clean toilet/shower and the fact it was a car free field (car park nearby though and able to offload tent etc very close!) A wonderful place

The Paddock primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked: Beautiful views, not too many pitches but n the campsite, giving a sense of space and well kept toilet /shower block. Swings for children. Friendly owners and prompt correspondence when I emailed a query.

Disliked: Only thing I noticed was the sound of a small generator near the reception area, however it was turned off in the evening.

The Paddock primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked: Stayed on this site for two nights as it was close (30 mins drive) to the Edinburgh park and ride for the Fringe fest. Well located site - close to local amenities but still has a very rural feel on the drive in. Great views of the nearby towns and the fells in the background. Very friendly, helpful host. Site and facilites were very clean and tidy. We enjoyed our stay!

Disliked: Lower field for camping was a little water-logged in places because there had been a lot of rain, but you just need to choose your pitch carefully. During drier periods, this won't be a problem.

Local attractions

For modern icons of Scotland, there’s the Falkirk Wheel (five minutes' drive) and the spectacular Kelpies (20 minutes) – otherwise blend past and present with explores of museums, galleries, castles and science centres in Glasgow and Edinburgh (30 minutes and 55 minutes away respectively). There’s lots to do nearby if time in nature is a draw, starting with Bonnyfield Nature Reserve, a little over five minutes’ drive from the site for bikes and wanders. Not satisfying outdoorsy cravings? Leisurely wanders – and distractions for little kids – await in the lovely Dollar Park gardens, 10 minutes away. Animal fans can get up close and personal with exotic reptiles, bugs and mammals at ZooLab Jungle Rooms, 15 minutes from base, and there are bigger experiences close by too – Blair Drummond Safari Park, Deep Sea World and Briarlands Farm are all less than 40 minutes from the site. Digging around the past is as simple as one would expect from a country famed for its castles too… The spectacular Callendar House (a 19th-century mansion built in the French Renaissance style) is 15 minutes away, and the Dunmore Pineapple and the historic re-enactments at Duncarron Medieval Village are both within half an hour.
