  • Pods on a family farm in the Loch Lomond & The Trossachs National Park
  • A short walk to the West Highland Way; more hikes and cycles nearby
  • Large decking with area with a picnic table; shop five minutes' drive
Long hikes and bike rides? Lochs, mountains and distilleries? That’s quite a combo even by Scottish standards and the sort of thing that you’ll be well-situated for at Duncan Family Farms in the Loch Lomond & The Trossachs National Park. This Stirlingshire site has bespoke luxury glamping pods on a family farm, each with a roomy decking for alfresco eating. The pods are designed to be thoroughly relaxing, with plenty of privacy (spaced 20 metres apart) and an ensuite shower room, double bed and a double sofa bed (while they’ve been created for two, they can sleep up to four). Expect to have your own handmade country-style kitchen featuring a Belfast sink, hob, microwave, TV, wifi and heating. One of the highlights has to be the outside too: the decking has a picnic table and a barbecue area (provided in high season only). All those eating options – plus a food shop five minutes’ drive away – is good news for those of you who are stopping off while hiking along the West Highland Way. The end of the first leg is under 15 minutes’ walk away. Other good news – the site has teamed up with baggage transfer organisations if you want your bags dropped off and collected from the pods while you walk the route. Other hikes and bike rides are never too far away – these include the John Muir Way from Helensburgh in the west to Dunbar on the east coast, which can be joined approximately 15 minutes’ drive away, and the Rob Roy Way, which starts in Drymen (five minutes’ drive) and heads all the way to Pitlochry down old drove roads used by Scottish cattle thieves.

Local attractions

What other ways to take in the lochs, forests and hills? National Cycle Route 7 runs by the site and in the mountains there’s the big bucket-list-worthy hike up Ben Lomond (50 minutes’ drive), a short but steep climb up Conic Hill (15 minutes) and splendid views from Dumgoyne (15 minutes), a volcanic neck on the edge of the Campsie Fells. Glengoyne Distillery (15 minutes) uses water from Dumgoyne in its whisky-making process – sample it on a tour and nab a bottle of Highlands-style malt for sunset later. It’s a short drive for various golfing and fishing destinations. Even closer by, watch wild salmon leap over the Pots of Gartness (15 minutes’ walk) and chase waterfalls at The Devil's Pulpit (50 minutes). Historic places include The Hill House (half an hour's drive) designed by Charles Rennie Mackintosh, and Stirling Castle (35 minutes). Cities? Glasgow (50 minutes) and Edinburgh (an hour and a half) are doable as a day trip.
