  • No-frills site at a working brewery a 10-minute drive from Jedburgh
  • Monteviot Gardens 10 minutes’ drive; Berwick-upon-Tweed an hour
  • Dogs welcome; walks along the River Teviot; nearby fishing and hiking
Hops enthusiasts might like to form an orderly line and reserve a spot (and do it pronto – this is a small site) at Born Brewery, a peaceful site a 10-minute drive from Jedburgh in the Scottish Borders. At this site you’ll be parking your motorhome in the grounds of a working microbrewery, and while they don't sell their wares on site, staying here is a great way to help support a small business. Amenities at this family-friendly site are scarce (there's no electric hook-up and no running water), but what you do get more than makes up for it: there's a distinct sense of remoteness, with views of barley fields that seem to go on forever. The site is backed by a stream beyond which flows the River Teviot, where you can fish for salmon and trout (just be sure to get a permit before you cast a line). Relaxed strolls along the riverfront might be all the exercise you need during your break. However, if you are here with an energetic dog clamouring for proper walkies, check out the nearby Minto Hills (10 minutes' drive), where a circular path takes you to an altitude of 689ft, or Eildon Hill North (20 minutes), where a challenging scramble to an even higher summit is rewarded with views of the distant Lammermuir Hills. After all that, you'll no doubt want to stop in at the local pub, two miles away, for a pint of something… perhaps something that's been brewed here on site?

Local attractions

The small town of Jedburgh (10 minutes’ drive) punches way above its weight in terms of attractions. These include the atmospheric ruins of a 12th-century abbey (with a medieval-style herbal garden) and, at the other end of the High Street, a stone house where Mary Queen of Scots spent a few weeks in 1566. It now displays paintings and artefacts related to the monarch. Monteviot Gardens (10 minutes) is a top spot for a relaxing stroll in lush surrounds, whether its woodland, arboretum or water gardens, with three islands linked by wooden bridges. The terrace in front of the 18th-century house has great views over the River Teviot. In Berwick-upon-Tweed (an hour), you can marvel at the imposing Royal Border Bridge, a Victorian 28-arch railway viaduct, before heading to the pretty harbour to board a boat for a trip along the North Sea coast, where you might spot seals and dolphins, as well as a range of sea birds.
