  • Smart Perthshire lodges on the banks of the River Tay near Pitlochry
  • Perth and the Cairngorms National Park within a half-hour drive
  • Balcony, well-equipped kitchen and beds made up for each lodge
Smart stays in stunning surroundings and simple to get to? If that sounds like a lot of good things all rolled into one, chances are you’ll very much like life at Logierait Lodges. This Perthshire park is pretty much in prime position, easily accessible from the A9 about 10 minutes’ drive from Pitlochry. The immediate surroundings have much to offer on the scenery front: Loch Tay, the Tay Forest Park and the southern end of the Cairngorms National Park are all within a drive of half an hour or so, and the River Tay runs just past the site (with access for walks and fishing). All of this puts guests within easy reach of all sorts of outdoor activities, from gentle days of walking or playing golf through to more adrenaline-fuelled ones of canyoning and abseiling. That said, this central Scotland location means that it’s easy to mix up such things with city-based days in Perth (half an hour away by car), Dundee (an hour), Glasgow and Edinburgh (both about an hour and a half). Whatever you plump for, a good comfy base will await you at the end of the day. All the lodges here have been kitted out to a high standard with a well-equipped kitchen, bathroom (with luxury towels provided), living area with TV and beds all made up with top-notch bed linen for your arrival. A covered balcony area is outside each one, so you’ll have somewhere to sit and soak up the views (perhaps with a little whisky in hand from one of the nearby distilleries?)

Local attractions

All levels of walkers and bike riders should be able to find plenty of routes to follow in the local area, from gentle strolls by Loch Tay (half an hour’s drive) to more challenging treks among the peaks of the Cairngorms National Park (20 minutes). An activity centre in Ballinluig (five minutes) is the place for rafting, canyoning and abseiling, and there’s golf to play in Pitlochry (10 minutes), Aberfeldy (15 minutes) and Kenmore (half an hour). Dial down the pace a little after all that with a thorough exploration of the area’s history: the lavishly decorated Blair Castle (15 minutes) and the fortified Castle Menzies (20 minutes) are both worth a visit, as is Scone Palace (40 minutes), a grand Gothic pile that was once the place where Scottish kings were crowned. There is of course no finer way to finish a day in this part of the world than a few drams of whisky: pick yours up and take tours at Edradour Distillery (10 minutes), Blair Atholl Distillery (10 minutes), Dewar’s (15 minutes) or Glenturret Distillery (45 minutes).

Liked: Excellent walks, Pitlochry was a lovely wee town to visit only several miles down the road.

Disliked: Shame the inn wasn’t open.
