  • Family-run bell tent site on a hobby farm in Highland Perthshire
  • A 10-minute drive from Pitlochry and the Blair Athol Distillery
  • Dog-friendly, with on-site dog sitting, agility course and walks
If you’re the type who likes a rural getaway but not when you have to pitch your own tent, take yourself to Tomnauld Farm. This Highland Perthshire site has fully furnished bell tents that will let you skip the pitching and get straight to what you're here for: exploring and unwinding. The family-run glampsite really packs in some spectacular views too, as it's on a 10-acre hobby farm with mountains on the horizon. Pitlochry is just a 10-minute drive away too, with views of Loch Faskally from the dam and a riverside theatre. The farm has a storage stage for bicycles and other large outdoor equipment, so you'll be nicely set up for various outdoorsy activities. Families can also arrange to take the kids to meet and feed the resident pygmy goats, miniature Shetland pony and a flock of friendly chickens. Luckily for those pets you can't bear to part with, Tomnauld Farm is also very dog-friendly. As well as having walks and an agility course, it runs a 'stay and play' service for when you want to do outings without your furry companion, whether that be fine dining, whitewater rafting or going for a tasting at the Blair Athol Distillery 10 minutes’ drive away. For an open-air breakfast or dinner, each bell tent is equipped with a barbecue, a woodburning stove with a kettle, a firepit and both indoor and outdoor seating. There’s also a small communal kitchen with fridges where you’re welcome to store breakfast bits and meat for the grill. The Sheiling is the farm’s dedicated ‘rainy day barn’ with comfy sofas, tables and chairs. There are plenty of games to occupy you here, from the board game library to a pool table and table football, as well as a TV.

Local attractions

This is a fine, fine spot for hiking. Begin in Black Spout Wood (10 minutes’ drive) by scouting out the 60-metre Black Spout waterfall. That’s just a warm-up for more challenging ascents such as Ben Vrackie (20 minutes) or Schiehallion (45 minutes). Now, for a bit of history combined with your stroll, you could try Castle Menzies (35 minutes) or Blair Castle & Gardens (20 minutes). The second has a nine-acre walled garden and a deer park. The Hermitage (25 minutes) was an 18th-century pleasure ground, and its Douglas firs are some of the tallest trees in Britain. A drink with a view, perhaps? Try the Queen's View Visitor Centre (25 minutes) tearoom overlooking Loch Tummel or the Killiecrankie Visitor Centre and Jacobite Cafe (15 minutes) with views of a wooded gorge. For something stronger, the Dalwhinnie Distillery (45 minutes) runs tasting masterclasses.
