Hardstanding pitches

  • Hardstanding motorhome pitches on a traditional working farm
  • In the Cairngorms National Park, five minutes’ drive from Nethy Bridge
  • Small and family-run, with Highland countryside views; dog-friendly
Motorhome pitches with views of the Highlands countryside and a peaceful, family-run base – sounds pretty spectacular, right? Even more so when those pitches are in the Cairngorms National Park and not too far from the Speyside Way. Garlyne Bae is a small, welcoming base for exploring Speyside and beyond. The fully-serviced hardstanding motorhome pitches all have 16-amp electric hook-up, water, wifi and parking beside the pitch. It doesn’t get much more convenient than that, unless you’re a dog owner, in which case it does; up to two dogs are welcome per pitch. Just remember that there are no toilets, showers or washing-up facilities on site, but there is a chemical disposal point for a small charge, so all guests must be fully self-contained. When you’re ready to explore the locale, begin by paying a visit to the local village, Nethy Bridge, which is a five-minute drive away. It has some splendid establishments, from the cosy hotel-pub serving filling meals and a small coffee shop to tennis courts and a bowling green where sporty types can get their fill. Pick up the essentials at the friendly grocery shop and then browse the locally reared meats and produce at the village butcher to put together a show-stopping barbecue back at your pitch. Garlyne Brae is in a quiet spot in the countryside, so it’s also a nice base for things like walking, wildlife watching and whisky-tasting (it is the Highlands, after all…). There are local woodland and riverside paths, and the famed Speyside Way is also nearby, handy for those who fancy following the river Spey through forest, moorland and whisky country.

Local attractions

If you like the sound of starting your morning with a short stroll and hopefully some wildlife sightings, make a beeline for RSPB Scotland Loch Garten Nature Centre (15 minutes’ drive). Set among the pine forest next to Loch Garten, lucky visitors can spot breeding ospreys, woodpeckers and red squirrels. It’s also worth taking note of popular local annual events like the August Highland Games in Nethy Bridge (five minutes), which features traditional dancing and athletic competitions, and the Grantown Agricultural Show (15 minutes), known for its livestock judging, parades, crafts and family activities. Speaking of families, there’s plenty to do here for you too. The Landmark Forest Adventure Park (20 minutes) has rope trails and water coasters, while the Highland Wildlife Park (35 minutes) houses beasts like polar bears and tigers. All ages should appreciate the steam train rides on the Strathspey Railway from Aviemore (20 minutes) to Broomhill Station and the quad-biking, clay pigeon shooting and falconry at the grand Rothiemurchus estate (25 minutes). You might want to reserve this last one for adults only, though: a whisky tasting or tour of the local Cairn Distillery (10 minutes).
