  • Motorhome aire five minutes’ drive from Glenmore, in the Cairngorms
  • Rothiemurchus 10 minutes’ drive; Highland Folk Museum 35 minutes
  • Secure gated site with views of Loch Morlich
Anyone on a driving holiday through Cairngorms National Park should really do themselves a favour and book a spot at Cairngorm Motorhome Site. Yes, this aire sits in a car park, but Coire na Ciste is as far removed from your average car park as it gets. Indeed it's safe to assume that its spectacular location will have most people saying 'Take my money now'. This stopover for motorhomes and campervans is about three miles (five minutes’ drive) from the village of Glenmore. What are the best things about staying here? Let's see… well, it's impossible not to talk about the views first: forested mountains as far as the eye can see and Loch Morlich at your feet. Pretty epic, you’ll surely agree. As well as those outstanding views, the site has plenty of amenities including a water feed and disposal points for grey water, chemical waste and refuse. (However, please note that there are no showers or toilets, and no hot water either, so only vehicles with an onboard toilet are allowed here.) This is a secure site with gated access and a code-locked entry system, so advance booking is essential. For a daily charge, guests can also access all the facilities at the resort of Cairngorm Mountain (five minutes' drive), including a café and toilets, plus activities such as guided walks and tubing. There’s also the Mountain Garden, planted with hardy species that thrive at low temperatures. Or you can head to Loch Morlich, where you can sit on a sandy beach (or have a go at canoeing and paddleboarding) with views of snow-capped peaks.

Local attractions

For a year-round Christmassy vibe, you can count on the residents at Cairngorm Reindeer Herd (five minutes’ drive). Experienced handlers share their knowledge of the animals during paddock visits here, or you can book a trip up the hill to spend time in the thick of the 150-strong herd. A splendid landscape of forests, mountains and glens awaits at Rothiemurchus (10 minutes), where you can take part in a range of outdoor activities: from pony trekking to axe throwing, and from white-water tubing to quad biking. As you roam the estate, you're also likely to come across the local wildlife, from deer to Highland cattle. Curious about the history of the area? At the Highland Folk Museum (35 minutes), a series of reconstructed buildings – including Scottish Travellers’ tents and a 1930s school – help to illustrate three centuries of domestic, agricultural and industrial life.

Primitive gravel and cement/asphalt RV campsite

Liked: Beautiful views, morning reindeer

Disliked: No code to get into site. No one available to get help. Postcode takes you to other side of ski lodge which is a closed road, incorrect location. And incurred a £3 charge to get motor home turned round as had to use parking places that had barriers to enable motor home enough room to move round

Disliked: Könnte günstiger sein. Bis auf die Müllentsorgung hat der Betreiber nichts zu leisten.
