  • Spacious 13-acre back to nature park on the Carlow-Wicklow border
  • A 40-minute drive to the coast and the Wicklow Mountains National Park
  • Barbecue area, play area with sandpit and huge grassy area for games
You'll get a mighty friendly welcome at Raven's Rest in a valley between the towns of Tinahely and Hacketstown on the Carlow-Wicklow border – and a smashing setting too, as the site is greenly set across a huge 13-acre park and lies only 40 minutes from the sea and the edge of the Wicklow Mountains National Park. Have a stay here to wander along the on the Wicklow Way – one of Ireland’s most scenic walking routes, to road trip around the Garden of Ireland or investigate the glacial valley and the sixth-century monastic settlement of Glendalough. The park is a simple and spacious one, and there aren’t too many distractions from the pleasant countryside setting save a playground where kids can find their fun on the swings and in the sandpit; a tennis net for bouncing balls back and forth over, and oodles of wide open grassy space and goalposts for ball games and lots of general running around. And as befits a back to nature site such as this, campfires are allowed, and a barbecue area is on site for sunset soirees. Prep your food in the on-site kitchen area and pick up fuel on site. The two local towns of Tinahely and Hacketstown have plenty of shops, pubs and restaurants for when you want to pick up picnic supplies or give yourself a well-earned break and dine out, check out local trad sessions or have a pint or two with friendly locals.

Local attractions

Lots of lovely walks crisscross the area: hike along the disused railway line that leads from Tinahely to Tomnafinnoge Woods in the nearby town of Shillelagh, or try out any of the the three new circular waymarked trails that lie close by. Tinahely is also close to the Wicklow Way, one of Ireland’s most scenic long-distance hiking trails. Bring your beach towels and buckets and spades and drive 40 minutes out to the spectacular coastline to explore the seaside town of Arklow, and be sure to take a trip to the valley of the two lakes in County Wicklow’s Glendalough, where there’s a handsome sixth-century monastic settlement to admire. For kid-themed fun, take the littlies to the petting zoo at Tinahely farm or to Clara Lara fun park, where they can hurtle down the aquashuttle, paddle around in an amphicat or whizz around the karting track. Rope swings, climbing courses, a zipline and obstacle courses are here too to pack even more action in.
