  • Repurposed tour bus a 10-minute drive from the Mendip Hills, Somerset
  • Cheddar Gorge 25 minutes’ drive; Weston-super-Mare half an hour
  • Fully equipped kitchen; private wetroom; woodfired hot tub
You too can feel like a rockstar when staying at Mendip View Camping, on the outskirts of the Mendip Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (10 minutes’ drive). At this intimate, family-friendly site a five-minute drive (or a half-hour walk) from the Somerset village of Winford, accommodation is in a repurposed tour bus that sleeps up to six guests, with a master bedroom and four bunk beds. Soft furnishings echo the rock ‘n’ roll credentials of the place, with cushions adorned with music-related images (cassette tapes and band logos) and decadently cosy furry throws, plus cool lighting, a large flatscreen TV and a Bluetooth music system so you can pump up your favourite jams. And for the ultimate rockstar treat, there will be a bottle of prosecco waiting for you on arrival. The fully equipped kitchen comes with your regular electric hob, kettle, toaster and fridge freezer – but there’s also everybody’s latest object of desire: an air fryer. If you’d rather cook on a campfire, you can get the barbecue going; and on a warm summer’s night, not much beats dining alfresco, at a picnic table under an awning decorated with vintage-style bunting and string lights. You could almost be at Glastonbury – except here you have your own private wetroom with shower and toilet. After dinner (or before dinner, if you prefer – you’re a rockstar after all, and you can do whatever whenever), you might want to chill with a soak in the woodfired hot tub as you take in views of the Chew Valley hills.

Local attractions

Get to know the legacy of Kingdom Isambard Brunel in Bristol (25 minutes’ drive), where works by the 19th-century engineer include the Clifton Suspension Bridge and the passenger liner SS Great Britain. There are also Banksy street murals to check out (such as the artist’s take on The Girl With Pearl Earring) and a lively scene of independent restaurants and shops. Cheddar Gorge (25 minutes) is the place for epic clifftop walks. And if the views from your hike aren’t good enough for you, you can climb the 274 steps of Jacob’s Ladder for truly spectacular vistas across the Mendip Hills AONB. Other activities here include rock climbing and caving. Weston-super-Mare (half an hour) has a pier with amusement arcades, rides and cafés. Grab some fish ‘n’ chips to eat on the beach, have a go at watersports or (if you’re travelling with kids) head to the Water Adventure Play Park or the miniature golf course.
