Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked: I liked that there was plenty of space and it felt very rural eg. you don't get any road noise. Also liked that it was cheap! I mainly chose this site as it's the nearest to a park and ride into Bath which was a good, reliable service. The facilities were very, very basic but I knew that from other reviews. They were cleaned regularly, it's just that they obviously get muddy again quickly when it's been raining - can't be helped.

Disliked: Nothing. Just expect a basic site and you won't be disappointed. I was pleased I was in a little car as the approach roads are single track lanes. People with vans managed fine though.

Primitive grass tent campsite (backpacker, solo)

Liked: The lake and car parking by your pitch

Disliked: The check out time, I think 11am is too early for a camp site. There is nothing to get ready for the next customer so it will be nice if they modify it in the future

Primitive grass travel trailer campsite

Liked: Really friendly people running the site, very relaxed and dog friendly. Toilet and shower block. Good walks up the country lanes from the site, and about a mile from a really great pub (The Upton Inn).

Disliked: No hot water in the bathroom sink or washing up sink. Other campers were a bit noisy - didn't bother us, but some campers may not like that.

Primitive grass travel trailer campsite

Liked: Clean facilities, friendly staff, location was good for both Bath and Bristol. Good for fishing as there is a small lake on site.

Disliked: Busy site so finding a flat pitch was a bit difficult. Campsite down some small lanes which may be difficult for touring caravans.

Primitive grass travel trailer campsite

Liked: It’s a varied site set in nice countryside - lovely wild glamping field. Pleasant Hedgehog field for tents only. Then 2 other fields fox and badger fields. The one next to the small lake has varied choice for pitches and a natural feel. Peter who runs the site single handed is a very affable helpful man, passionate about fish, lakes and his guests getting the most out of their stay. When we realised we couldn’t stay in Hedgehog field in the camper van he showed us a great secluded spot right next to the lake . Sadly it was raining on both nights we stayed breaking our journey either end betweenLondon and Devon. A good site to break a journey from London to Wales, Cornwall or Devon. Loos were simple but clean . Didn’t try a shower.

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked: A lovely and quiet campsite. Flat, firm ground made finding the perfect place to pitch our tent easy. Chemical toilet disposal area was welcome as we always take our own toilet (although there are facilities onsite). Shower was always hot and toilets were clean enough for us to use without any concern. The campsites location is ideal for exploring the surrounding towns such as Bath, Bristol, Cheddar Gorge and Weston-super-Mare to name just a few of the nearby places worth going to. Despite being firmly in the country, a short drive (no more than 10 mins) will get you to local supermarkets, restaurants, takeaways, parks, cinemas, etc… The site owner seemed very friendly and welcoming.

Disliked: Toilet block very basic. It was fine for us but I’m sure that they may be a little too basic for some. Took my wife and daughter a couple of days to realise that the controls for the woman’s shower was installed backwards (other women on the site had also thought that the women’s shower had no hot water!).

Local attractions

Want to stay close to base on days you’re not out sightseeing in Bristol or Bath? Steam along to the Avon Valley Railway a mile and a half from the site for a vintage train ride on its three-mile run through peaceful countryside (check opening times before setting out as the railway is generally only open on weekends and during school holidays). If you’d prefer to get about under your own steam, it’s a mile from Boyd Valley Lake to the Bristol to Bath cycle track, the 13-mile traffic free route between both cities. Opt to walk or cycle the path (access is provided for wheelchairs too), stopping off along the way to spot sculptures and old steam engines: the track is also an art trail and passes the steam engines at Bitton station. Options further afield include Cheddar Gorge, Wells and Wookey Hole, all 50 minutes’ drive away, and the National Trust-managed Dyrham Park (15 minutes), Prior Park Landscape Garden (25 minutes), Lacock Abbey (35 minutes) and Tyntesfield Victorian house (40 minutes).
