  • Working farm site in the Cranborne Chase National Landscape
  • Salisbury, Stonehenge and Longleat within a half-hour drive
  • Small kitchenette on site; fire bowls and barbecues for hire
Days out rambling on rural footpaths or taking in famed local attractions, swinging home via the village pub and then back to the farm – that may well be the dream for your Wiltshire break. And it's also real life at Marshwood Farm, a family-friendly site on a working sheep/arable farm surrounded by the ancient woods, hills and gorgeous rural views of the Cranborne Chase National Landscape. Spend your entire break taking in the scenery if you wish, but there’s also a lengthy ticklist of other attractions within easy reach – Salisbury’s 20 minutes away by car, and the site’s also within a half-hour drive of Stonehenge, Shaftesbury, Stourhead and Longleat. The little village of Dinton (home to a pub and a small café) is a mile away, and there are plenty of footpaths and cycleways to roam along in the surroundings. Back at the farm, there's a communal utility barn with flushing toilets, warm showers and a washing-up sink, plus other niceties including a small kitchenette and a communal fridge and freezer. Firepits and barbecues are welcome (off-ground or in a fire bowl only). At the small, basic on-site honesty shop, there are fire bowls and barbecues for hire, plus things like cans of soup, kindling and wood for sale.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked Everything. We are local so we like to have a favourite one within a very short distance from home. Loved the huge spacious pitches which were mowed and level. Fantastic facilities spotless at all times. The indoor area with fridges freezers wi fi honesty shop was a bonus. The microwave kettle toaster were a hit with us all. Toilets were immaculate along with showers. Plenty of hot water. The owner Catherine was just great very helpful and on hand to answer any queries. We are animal lovers but a max score for us as no dogs allowed. Time and time again we get woken by dogs barking at night and in mornings/ dogs not kept on leads wandering around the sites, so we could relax and enjoy the peaceful pretty surroundings and the children were all safe. Just our number one local venue.

Disliked Nothing everything deserves a ten plus out of ten

Primitive grass tent campsite (backpacker, solo, no cars)

Liked Lovely area to pitchup for two nights,as a newbie Solo bike packer. Working farm surroundings. Plenty of wildlife, lovely walks and dare I say a few hills to conquer on a bike. Lovely friendly host, warm welcome, all clean and usable facilities. I enjoyed the friendly location and locals , the peace and quiet with little traffic noise was a massive win for me.

Oak shepherd's hut

Liked A Little Slice of Heaven at Marshwood Farm

This was our second stay at Marshwood Farm in just a few weeks — and for good reason. We’ve now tried both the Oak and Bluebell shepherd huts, and we absolutely loved them both.

Each hut is beautifully set up with everything you could possibly need — Catherine, our lovely host, has thought of every detail so you don’t have to bring a thing. From the cozy wood burner to the thoughtfully stocked interior, it truly feels like a home away from home.

Each morning, we were treated to a delicious, warm breakfast delivered right to our door in a charming picnic hamper — such a treat to start the day!

The views are simply breathtaking, with peaceful countryside stretching as far as the eye can see. It’s the perfect place to unwind, switch off, and rest your soul.

We can’t wait to return. Thank you, Catherine and family at Marshwood — you’ve created something really special.

Local attractions

Start with a stroll around Salisbury (20 minutes’ drive), looking out for ancient half-timbered buildings and gazing upwards at the cathedral’s spire (famed for being England’s tallest at a whopping 123 metres). A little out of town, ponder how prehistoric people managed to set up Stonehenge (15 minutes) or wander around Wilton House (15 minutes), keeping an eye out for the fab Palladian river bridge as you roam the gardens. There are more gorgeous old buildings to be seen in Shaftesbury (25 minutes), whose cobbled Gold Hill will be familiar to guests of a certain vintage from a well-known bread-based TV advert. Rather grander is the setup at Stourhead (25 minutes), a National Trust estate that sprawls out to 1,000 acres, with all sorts of follies hidden in its midst. If you’ve not had your fill of fancy pads yet, there’s yet another fine mansion at Longleat (half an hour); if that’s enough of that for now, swerve instead to the estate’s safari park to see big cats, elephants and all sorts of other exotic beasts.
