  • Peaceful adults-only Wiltshire caravan site near Chippenham
  • Half an hour’s drive to Bath, 10 minutes to Lacock and five to the M4
  • Security barrier and dog-exercise field; pub five minutes’ walk
Neatly manicured grounds and lots of greenery dividing the pitches into bays are just a taster of what's in store at adults-only Plough Lane Caravan Site, near Chippenham in Wiltshire. Thanks to its proximity to the M4 (five minutes’ drive), it’s also thoroughly easy to access (no reversing down narrow lanes for tractors here) as well as being close to the southern Cotswolds and gorgeous historic Bath. The site is secured with a barrier and all pitches have electric hook-ups, water and waste water disposal points. Carefully maintained facilities include a heated shower block with hot water, spacious cubicles and hair dryers, plus a launderette with an iron and dryer. Brought the dogs on holiday too? Let them have an off-lead runaround in the designated exercise field. Looking for inspiration for days out? Have a nose through the books in the information area, which also has books and DVDs to keep you entertained on any rainy days. Although it's on the edge of open countryside, the site still offers lots of local amenities: you can walk to stops on bus routes to Chippenham and the Cotswolds town of Malmesbury within five minutes, and if you like the sound of a pint, there are a couple of pubs within a five-minute drive or a 25-minute walk of the site. Going down the self-catering route? Pick up supplies from the supermarket on the outskirts of Chippenham (five minutes’ drive).

What customers say

This adults-only spot gets kudos for its peaceful vibe, roomy, level pitches, and great M4 access. Guests love the clean washrooms, welcoming staff, and nearby bus stop. Some mention road noise from the highway and dated amenities, but many want to come back. A fenced dog run is a hit too.

Liked Lovely size pitch, level hard standing and grass.
Shower facilities a bit dated but spotless, shower gel and shampoo provided.

Disliked Slight road noise but did not bother our stay.
There is no bus service on Sunday or Bank Holiday, not the sites fault but just for information

Liked Not being full on a bank holiday weekend.
High hedges helped with Storm Dave - pitch 18 was very sheltered.
Being able to cycle to lovely surrounding villages - Kington St Michael, Castle Combe and Lacock Abbey.
Chippenham lovely to walk around and grab a bite to eat.
Friendliness of the locals.

Disliked Sadly drains were blocked on Good Friday, resolved evening of Easter Saturday.
Road noise was constant everywhere on site - we live on a main road but this was a whole different level being main dual carriageway into Chippenham.
No drive over drainage for motorhome.

Powered cement/asphalt and grass travel trailer campsite

Liked Spacious pitches with a blend of hard standing and grass pitch for everyone which I think is a great idea. Showers and toilets really clean. Lovely trees around the site and really easy to find. The staff were really helpful and friendly.

Disliked I could not access the internet at all where my pitch was so if you need it for work could be a problem. It is very noisy round the clock from the motorway / carriageway noise. I knew there would be noise but louder than I expected so just sharing for those who don't realise.

Local attractions

Fancy a nose around the southern Cotswolds? Lacock (10 minutes’ drive) is a rather lovely place to start, with lots of Georgian cottages and a riverside abbey where scenes from Harry Potter were filmed. Heading north is Castle Combe (15 minutes), often called the prettiest village in England), with a medieval market cross and a sprinkling of cosy tea rooms. Go way back in time to marvel at prehistoric man’s ingenuity with a visit to the stone circles and informative visitor centre at Stonehenge (50 minutes), or get up close to standing stones at Avebury. On the way between these two landmarks, stop off to admire 19th-century engineering skills at Caen Hill Locks (both half an hour) near Devizes, where a series of 29 locks rise up a steep hillside. Another local must-see Longleat (40 minute), with its popular safari tours to spot lions, tigers and giraffes, but if your interests are more city-based, head straight to Bath (half an hour) for its indie shopping and regal architecture, or nip up the M4 to Designer Outlet Swindon (20 minutes) for some serious bargain hunting.
