Spacious camping field

  • Off-grid Somerset farm campsite with spectacular Bristol Channel views
  • A 10-minute drive to Cheddar Gorge; 25 minutes to Weston-super-Mare
  • Grass pitches with basic facilities; five minutes’ walk to the pub
A working Somerset farm. Bristol Channel views. Back-to-basics family camping. Sounds like what you’re looking for? Here at Swallow Barn Farm, there's also a traditional country pub (with plenty of outdoor seating for balmy days) a mere five minutes’ stroll away. Grass pitches here are spacious, on sloping land and have spectacular views over Somerset countryside to the sea. Basic facilities include a single portable toilet; there is no electricity, however, so remember the torches for late-night wanderings around the site. Barbecues are allowed by the pitches, and you can pick up bits and pieces from the local essentials shop (10 minutes’ walk). A more extensively stocked store and garage is five minutes’ drive away. The site is 10 minutes’ walk from Rowberrow Forest and 15 minutes’ drive from the Mendip Hills National Landscape for hikes and cycle rides. You are welcome to bring your dogs to join in all the walkies fun, but please keep them under control when on site as there is livestock in adjacent fields.

What customers say

A peaceful, no-frills campsite with great views and space. Reviewers love the quiet, pub nearby, and it's dog-friendly. Basic facilities (Portaloos, cold tap) are noted; some wish for upgrades. Well-run, great value for short stays or a rural getaway.

From the manager: Thank you for leaving a review. Our information on PitchUp is very detailed and we state that we are a basic site with Portaloos and no showers. Seems a shame to base a review on something which is clearly stated. Thank you for your kind comments.

Primitive grass and earth tent or RV campsite (sloping, maximum 6 metres)

Liked Simple, as described. Soil is abit rocky so was hard to put tent pegs in abit but overall great place. Lovely view. The path to the field is well labeled, though a bit puddlely when it rains, so low vehicles should be careful.

Primitive grass and earth tent or RV campsite (sloping, maximum 6 metres)

Liked Quiet for our autistic/adhd child.

Disliked On arrival we phoned the telephone number given but they weren’t expecting our arrival.
There were toilet facilities available but in the way of a portaloo.
There was no one else there and no shops or anything near by.
We only stayed for one night due to weather. (Fault on our part going in October)

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Thank you for your review, in answer to some of your points, we are a fairly off grid campsite which we state clearly in the description. Our toilet facilities are Portaloos, also in our description. We don’t have shops nearby because we are a rural farm campsite, as stated in our description. The weather is also sadly beyond our control. If you would like better facilities, please choose from any number of campsites which state the facilities they offer. We did speak to you and were absolutely expecting you but you couldn’t remember how you’d booked so we couldn’t check it on the system. Hopefully next time you visit this area you can find a campsite which more meets your needs, but take some time to read the descriptions then you won’t be disappointed.

Primitive grass and earth tent or RV campsite (sloping, maximum 6 metres)

Liked Very scenic campsite with beautiful animals. Lots of great amenities nearby such as pub with amazing food and small town with some shops. Lovely walks as well very close to the campsite. Campsite felt very wild and like you were in the middle of nowhere - we only saw 2 other vans and didn’t interact with anyone else during our stay which was perfect for a short escape.

Disliked Road was audible at some points of the day but wasn’t a massive issue. Portaloo wasn’t clean but again, wasn’t really an issue as only used it once

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Thank you so much for your kind review, we really appreciate it. We check the Portaloo several times a day but unfortunately sometimes things happen in between checks! Hope it didn’t spoil your visit.

Local attractions

Spectacular landscapes are everywhere in this corner of Somerset, and you can admire the Mendip Hills National Landscape (15 minutes’ drive) on foot or by bike. Try the Blackdown Hills National Landscape (50 minutes) for hikes to the Norman-era Castle Neroche and nearby Iron Age remains (55 minutes), or go hiking, climbing and caving in dramatic Cheddar Gorge (10 minutes). For more subterranean explorations, take the kids on tours of the caverns at Wookey Hole Caves (25 minutes); once back above ground, follow the animatronic dinosaur trail. Need to keep everyone busy? Get out on the dry ski slope at Mendip Activity Centre (five minutes), or join in bouts of archery and games of frisbee golf – if you fancy a round of the real thing, head to the 18-hole course 15 minutes’ drive away. If the weather’s good, you might consider piling everyone in the car and heading to the popular beach at Weston-super-Mare (25 minutes) for a dip in the Bristol Channel, or Uphill Sands (half an hour) for kitesurfing and sand yachting. The family-friendly beach at Burnham-on-Sea (25 minutes) is the spot for building sandcastles and paddling in shallow waves.
