Spacious camping field

  • Off-grid Somerset farm campsite with spectacular Bristol Channel views
  • A 10-minute drive to Cheddar Gorge; 25 minutes to Weston-super-Mare
  • Grass pitches with basic facilities; five minutes’ walk to the pub
A working Somerset farm. Bristol Channel views. Back-to-basics family camping. Sounds like what you’re looking for? Here at Swallow Barn Farm, there's also a traditional country pub (with plenty of outdoor seating for balmy days) a mere five minutes’ stroll away. Grass pitches here are spacious, on sloping land and have spectacular views over Somerset countryside to the sea. Basic facilities include a single portable toilet; there is no electricity, however, so remember the torches for late-night wanderings around the site. Barbecues are allowed by the pitches, and you can pick up bits and pieces from the local essentials shop (10 minutes’ walk). A more extensively stocked store and garage is five minutes’ drive away. The site is 10 minutes’ walk from Rowberrow Forest and 15 minutes’ drive from the Mendip Hills National Landscape for hikes and cycle rides. You are welcome to bring your dogs to join in all the walkies fun, but please keep them under control when on site as there is livestock in adjacent fields.

What customers say

A peaceful, no-frills campsite with great views and space. Reviewers love the quiet, pub nearby, and it's dog-friendly. Basic facilities (Portaloos, cold tap) are noted; some wish for upgrades. Well-run, great value for short stays or a rural getaway.

Primitive grass and earth tent or RV campsite (sloping, maximum 6 metres)

Liked Delightfully simple! Personally a very welcome antidote to the overstimulation of modern life.
A field, sink, and toilet are supplied (and all that’s needed) at a more than reasonable nightly rate.
Bins for general waste, recycling and dog waste are a great bonus - which I’m sure helps keep the field as immaculate as it is.
Pitch where you want so can be next to friends or far away from other humans.
Straight out the driveway onto heaps of beautiful bridle ways and footpaths for exploring.
Dogs on leads policy keeps everyone safe and worry-free.

Disliked Nothing at all - keep up the good work!

Primitive grass and earth tent or RV campsite (sloping, maximum 6 metres)

Liked Not good

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Very frustrating lack of information. Not sure what communication you wanted but we are always on site and always happy to help any time. Sorry you didn’t enjoy your stay, maybe always check the extensive information on Pitch Up before you book then you can make an informed decision about whether this is the place for you. We are a basic site, we clearly state that, so for more facilities feel free to pick somewhere else that suits you better.

Primitive grass and earth tent or RV campsite (sloping, maximum 6 metres)

Liked Loads of room, huge field, really quiet, mains water at sink at top of field, really peaceful, great pub 2 mins walk away and the food was amazing, had a great few days away, will definitely use again

Disliked 1 portaloo, which we knew before arrival so not an issue for us but i felt it needed emptying as it was a bit grim on the day we were leaving,

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Thank you for your review and comments. Sorry the Portaloo was not up to standard, we always check every day and this shouldn’t happen. Apologies for that. I’m glad you enjoyed the rest of your stay.

Primitive grass and earth tent or RV campsite (sloping, maximum 6 metres)

Liked Another great stay here. Peaceful site. It's always a fab spot for the sunset. Some lovely walks close by and the pub down the road is lovely.

Disliked 1 portaloo, where as there were 2 last year, not sure if this for any reason but the one was clean so not a dislike as such, just curious

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Thank you for your kind review. So pleased you enjoyed your stay here. The Portaloo issue is one we keep a constant check on and we hire them depending on the amount of bookings. Sometimes we unfortunately don’t judge it as well as we should but hopefully it didn’t spoil your stay.

Primitive grass and earth tent or RV campsite (sloping, maximum 6 metres)

Liked Simple, as described. Soil is abit rocky so was hard to put tent pegs in abit but overall great place. Lovely view. The path to the field is well labeled, though a bit puddlely when it rains, so low vehicles should be careful.

Local attractions

Spectacular landscapes are everywhere in this corner of Somerset, and you can admire the Mendip Hills National Landscape (15 minutes’ drive) on foot or by bike. Try the Blackdown Hills National Landscape (50 minutes) for hikes to the Norman-era Castle Neroche and nearby Iron Age remains (55 minutes), or go hiking, climbing and caving in dramatic Cheddar Gorge (10 minutes). For more subterranean explorations, take the kids on tours of the caverns at Wookey Hole Caves (25 minutes); once back above ground, follow the animatronic dinosaur trail. Need to keep everyone busy? Get out on the dry ski slope at Mendip Activity Centre (five minutes), or join in bouts of archery and games of frisbee golf – if you fancy a round of the real thing, head to the 18-hole course 15 minutes’ drive away. If the weather’s good, you might consider piling everyone in the car and heading to the popular beach at Weston-super-Mare (25 minutes) for a dip in the Bristol Channel, or Uphill Sands (half an hour) for kitesurfing and sand yachting. The family-friendly beach at Burnham-on-Sea (25 minutes) is the spot for building sandcastles and paddling in shallow waves.
