The pub from the road
Peaceful pub garden complete with thatched smoking shelter
Hardstanding area in a sheltered spot by the fruit and vegetable garden

  • Peaceful camping field with year-round facilities
  • National Trust and English Heritage properties close by
  • Hike the 20 minutes up Ham Hill from the site
Check out this well-connected Somerset pub site… The Masons Arms is in the good-looking hamstone village of Odcombe near Yeovil, surrounded by topping walking trails – the 20-minute hike up Ham Hill is thoroughly recommended just to start strolls off. The Masons Arms is close to many Somerset attractions including National Trust and English Heritage properties, but is set peacefully well away from the main road. And as it's a pub site, dinner and drinks in the Arms each evening are also thoroughly recommended (the bar and restaurant are closed on Monday and reopen at 4pm on Tuesday) - no fights needed about who's going to drive home… Facilities at the Masons Arms include a modern unisex amenities block with two toilets, two showers, three sinks, a washing-up area, a hairdryer, an iron and an ironing board.

Liked: A very nice site with a pub , clean facilities, large pitches and very friendly staff.

Disliked: Toilets, showers and dish washing in the same room for both male and female. At least toilets should be separate .

Powered grass RV campsite

Liked: Delicious food for dinner and breakfast and very reasonably priced. Really friendly staff, very clean and modern facilities for campers and you can use the pub facilities as well during opening hours. Just so happened they had a live band the night we stayed so ended up having an unexpected lively and fun evening with the locals but otherwise this is a quiet secluded little spot in a beautiful chocolate box village. Good local lager too. We have already logged it as a place to return to for a nights get-away with great food and maybe music depending on dates. Oh and beautiful, well kept gardens too!

Disliked: Double booked pitch due to Pitch-Up (!) which caused some concern for proprietors however they found us a spot in the car park which worked for us as we are in a campervan and it was only for one night so not really an issue just want Pitch-Up to know as we could have been left without a spot for the night. Will likely book direct from now on.

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked: Basic pitch, nice people, quite quiet for a weekend in summer. Good food at the pub and reasonably priced. Excellent location and price.

Disliked: Toilets could do with a deep clean, allocated pitch upon arrival - no choice of where we wanted to go and too many people in one field, could do with having less pitches in the field to allow for more space between campers, parking is quite tight subsequently.

Shepherd's hut

Liked: Absolutely brilliant. We had the shepherds hut. Nice and warm with supplied tea, coffee, herbal-teas, sugar, milk, biscuits, a kettle and bottles of water. Cotton-buds, sanitary-products, make-up removal pads, tissues, towels, dressing-gowns etc. They thought of everything. We were on a motorbike tour so didn't have space for all the luxuries but Masons Arms thought of everything. A lovely breakfast was included (just fill out the breakfast form and select your choice from a fantastic range of options). There are occasional events and entertainment set up. The little village came alive for band night we were lucky to be there for (a really good tribute band playing everything rock to get you singing and dancing). There was no silly behavior. No excessive drunkenness. Everybody was happy. The local folk were really approachable and nice to talk to. Staff at the pub are amazing, all they want to do is support and help their guests. The food was really nice (good selection, well cooked and nicely presented). It's not a rowdy place at all. We had two nights of peace and great sleep on a very comfortable bed in a very well maintained camping area. The showers were hot, toilets clean, iron and hair dryer worked perfectly (even a baby change table). Every need catered for. We would go again in a heartbeat. Wi-Fi is always difficult wherever you camp so make sure you have data on your phone and if needed,- hot-spot to your tablet/laptop (worked for us). Happy memories

Disliked: Nothing to dislike

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked: A superb clean and tidy site. Small but perfectly formed with unisex facilities and Wifi in the field. Best of all the site is in the grounds of an excellent pub serving great food and with friendly staff. This is not an all-action, kiddie-friendly site with entertainers roaming around in highly coloured blazer. What it is is a site that is ideally suited for Yeovil (7 mins) and a great base for walking the surrounding countryside. They even have route cards in the loos!

Disliked: Nothing

Powered grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked: Level site. Pretty surroundings. Pleasant staff. Ideal if you like pub meals. Ideal if you have a motor home with on board toilet and showers and can do on board washing up.

Disliked: Pot washing area being in the toilets and next to nappy change area and nappy bin. Grubbiness around the edges of the shower floor and dust and dirt on the inside of the shower doors. Showers did not stay on long enough. No mop and bucket to clean shower. Two showers and two toilets not enough for 16 or so pitches.

From the manager: Thank you for your review. I am sorry you were disappointed by the restricted facilities for our 13 site, when we are busy we do encourage people to use the pub toilets to alleviate any pressure, and for people that would prefer not to use mixed toilets. We do try to restrict water wastage by using the push button showers and basins as people leave them running. The pub and campsite is owned by Hall and woodhouse brewery, and only they can expand the facilities, so i will forward your review on to them and i know there are plans to extend the facilities in the future. Kind regards Rose

Local attractions

Sunny days, rainy days and everything in between are all covered around The Masons Arms: check out the area's historic houses, its many walks, cider farms, museums… The pub is surrounded by walking country including many footpaths around the village and the walk to Ham Hill which can be reached with minimal road walking. Also within walking distance is the National Trust's Montacute House, an Elizabethan mansion surrounded by green gardens. Or motor around the local museums like the Fleet Air Arm and Haynes Motor Museum, both under 10 miles away. If you fancy a beach and heritage day out, the Jurassic Coast is within about 40 minutes' drive.
