  • Small, quiet adults-only site on the edge of Exmoor National Park
  • Dog-friendly; half an hour's walk from Wimbleball Lake and Haddon Hill
  • Small shop on site selling essentials; dog-friendly pub next door
Remote, rural, peaceful and just lovely are the boxes you'll tick at Lowtrow Cross Caravan and Camping Park, a small and friendly place close to Wimbleball Lake on the Somerset and Devon borders and on the edge of the spectacular Exmoor National Park. Set over four acres in an area of spectacular scenery, Lowtrow Cross Caravan and Camping Park is an adults-only site set up for guests to have restful and serene stays in a remote setting with easy access to many West Country attractions. Miles of uncrowded walking and cycling trails are easy to access from here, along with fishing, sailing, canoeing and horse riding. If you aim to take things a mite easier while on your peaceful break, Lowtrow Cross Caravan and Camping Park is also in a wildlife and birdwatching haven with an enclosed dog-walking area. The site is great for unwinding and watching the sunset over the moor scenery, and there's also more sky gazing when the sun goes down, as this part of Somerset is prime stargazing territory. (Nearby Exmoor was the first designated International Dark Sky Reserve in Europe too.) Friendly wardens Rob and Karen live on site and are rightly proud of their surroundings: they'll usually be out and about keeping the grounds and facilities tiptop, so give them a shout if you need any help or advice. There's a small shop on site selling essentials and local produce on site. A dog-friendly pub is also next door, just one minutes' walk away.

Power optional grass tent campsite (sloping)

Liked: Please keep this to yourself but this is one of the best sites we have visited in a long, long time. The management team go out of their way to make you feel welcome. The camping pitches are advertised as sloping but there is plenty of room and a few level grassy areas to chose from. The site is pristine and well kept. Loved the dog walking area with its sculptured paths. The toilets, showers and washing up area are all spotlessly clean.

Power optional grass tent campsite (sloping)

Liked: The location of the field was peaceful. The people staying in the motorhomes were also peaceful. The wardens were helpful. Toilets and showers very clean and well laid out. Nice tuc shop with a few essential items.

Disliked: The roads together here were often single track and drivers often drove too fast. The weather was bad. Lots of rain and wind. Out of control of the site so still give it 5 stars.

Disliked: Nothing to dislike. A suggestion- Would have been a nice touch to have some sort of hedging in-between pitches for privacy.

A - FHU cement/asphalt and grass travel trailer campsite

Liked: Beautiful, quiet site in the middle of the countryside with great walks for the dog. The wardens and relief wardens were all super friendly and helpful, especially providing extra equipment to help us deal with some very wet weather at the beginning of our stay. The little dog walk area was also good for those short early morning and late night walks. Having a lovely pub just down the drive was great too. All in all a fabulous place to stay.

Disliked: We would have liked the dog walked to be fully fenced rather than just on 3 sides as we were worried that our young dog might run to other people’s pitches and annoy them if we let her off lead. However just having the dog walk was a bonus, so not really a problem
