  • Small orchard campsite in the peaceful Dorset village of Trent
  • Sherborne 10 minutes' drive; Abbotsbury and Weymouth 50 minutes
  • Just off the Monarch's Way walk; walk to the village pub or play area
For a taste of delicious Dorset idyll, book a break at Monarch's Way Campsite, a small site where pitches are set in a sheltered orchard on the edge of a peaceful village. Located just off the Monarch's Way, a 625-mile long-distance footpath that crisscrosses some of England's most scenic rural areas, the pitches here are surrounded by blossoming fruit trees and dappled sunlight. Listen out for the gentle hum of bees and occasional chirping of the birds as you settle into your cosy camping spot. What you do next is up to you – you might like to just hang around and unwind among the trees as the evening draws in, but there's also a friendly village pub a few minutes' walk away that you can stroll towards for good food and drink (handily, guests can get a 10% discount here for breakfasts and breakfast sandwiches). A playground is also 100 metres away from the site. Back at the campsite there are good basic amenities, including clean toilets and fresh water taps. Well-behaved dogs and safely set up barbecues are allowed, so bring the whole family along and prepare for an alfresco cookout or two. Nearby Sherborne (10 minutes' drive) has plenty of places to stock up, as well as other handy amenities like cafés, pubs and a railway station.

Primitive grass RV campsite

Liked: In a lovely orchard, with a green woodpecker and a jay on arrival, we had the place to ourselves! Rose and Crown a few minutes away with a delicious evening meal.

Disliked: Nothing

Bell tent

Liked: Had a relaxing and quiet stay in the Bell Tent. Jeremy the owner was first class (sorry we didn’t meet) in communication and what he provided I thoroughly recommend this tranquil spot if you want to decompress after a busy week! The nearby pub (Rose and Crown) is a 5 minute walk (if that) and the food and beer was delicious, with very friendly landlady. All in all a wonderful stay in a beautiful village, a crackling fire on a lovely site and falling asleep listening to the tawny owls calling. Bliss. Thanks again Jeremy..I’ll be back!

Primitive grass RV campsite

Liked: Two relaxing days spent in such a tranquil spot. The orchard setting offers an informal "wild" camping experience with plenty of space which is perfect for us. Jeremy was friendly and welcoming. The village of Trent is peaceful with a wonderful pub where the garden has unspoiled views of the surrounding countryside. This is a great find and we will definitely be returning for another stay.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked: Everything. Remote, quiet and peaceful place. Proper "off grid" experience: old school outhouses(privies) as toilets, cold water supply and that's about it. Good reset from busy city life especially for kids without electronic gadgets. People overlooking the place very helpful and friendly. They're not at the campsite everyday so good to give them a shout earlier if need something (like fire wood). Already planning to return there.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked: Campsite exactly as described, in a apple orchard, rustic and wild. Good size pitches. Compost toilets, male and female - Good condition. Basic washing up facilities but covered all needs, thoughtful done with plenty of room for all pots and pans. A 'snug' with activities for younger children and information of the area and sharing love of local wildlife. The owner popped by in the morning, contact us the day we arrived - very helpful. Lovely natural feeling to the site, we loved it! No Wifi not a dislike there was service in the area. Did not need WiFi

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked: A beautiful, peaceful orchard on the edge of a sleepy village. Friendly, helpful staff who are down to earth and care about the natural habitat. The grass is left quite long and natural, but they cut a patch shorter for our pitch. One of their site rules; You must learn a little about the many butterflies which can be seen around the site.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked: The most amazing owner who could not have done any more to make our stay extra special. The campsite is very much back to nature but with the essentials of running water and a compost toilet and is in an absolutely glorious spot in the lovely village of Trent, Dorset. The local pub was fantastically welcoming (even with 2 children and 2 Labrador’s in tow!) and served hearty delicious food.

Local attractions

Starting off in Sherborne (10 minutes' drive), take yourselves for a wander around the town's two castles, both of which are located next to a peaceful lake, before heading over to Sherborne Abbey in the bustling town centre. There's a monthly artisans' market in town where you can pick up tasty treats and souvenirs, but there's no need to worry if your dates don't coincide, as there are also farm shops and some excellent independent cafés to try. Nature and wildlife enthusiasts should not miss the opportunity to visit the Abbotsbury Swannery and Subtropical Gardens (50 minutes), both of which are located close to the pretty Dorset coast. After watching the mute swans gliding across the lagoon and checking out the garden's impressive array of flora, head down the road to the sandy beaches at Weymouth (50 minutes) for a traditional bucket and spade experience. If you're in search of more coastal spots, Jurassic Coast towns like Lyme Regis (an hour) are unlikely to disappoint – here you can search for fossils along the water's edge, go mackerel fishing, check out the geology at nearby Charmouth Beach or get up close and personal with local sealife at the town's small aquarium.
