Primitive grass RV campsite
Liked: the owners were very helpful and obliging. Campsite information was comprehensive and thorough The flat site, on a hill overlooking Devon hills and forests was perfect. The grass immaculate. It's proximate to Totnes by bus car or foot. Walking trails are all set out for you in a pamphlet. There is a great walk down an ancient covered lane to an award winning pub which serves great food and ale. The site has alpacas, ducks and geese and a very proud peacock! Facilities are excellent.

Primitive grass tent campsite
Liked: The site was lovely and quiet and we had plenty of space to set up the tent. The pitches are all nice and flat. There were lovely views of the countryside and the alpacas were in the fields around and in the barn next to the washing up area watching us. We were left nicely undisturbed and pitched next to the hedge we were more sheltered from the wind we had on the first day. The glamper bathroom is very nicely decorated and the guard goose in the pen outside it is very funny, although a little loud during a night visit. It could be a very nice site for campers with some more work.
Disliked: Unfortunately there were some areas we disliked. The glamping bathroom is for the onsite wigwam guests to use, toileting is ok but you are asked to use the shower after all the glampers, it's a tank fed so you may not be left with hot water and the site suggests after 9:30am which as early risers is not ideal, there was also no mop so the floor was so wet in there after several people. The alternative campers toilet is inadequate. The toilet door is rough wood so has large gaps in so you can see out through it and it does not reach the top of the frame by several feet leaving it basically an outside toilet next to the glampers kitchen so no privacy. There is no sink in there the basin is outdoors next to it. The shower is electric but also has large gaps in the door, luckily the light was broken or it will illuminate you for the whole site to see! It's also very small so a tall person would struggle to change in there without breaking off the shelf. It's such a contrast to the glampers, I get campers don't mind it a bit rougher but still expected more from nice sites. There is also a fridge/freezers for the glampers, not campers. Washing up area can be used as long as glampers don't want it first. We just felt very much like we were tolerated not wanted. The cars are not on your pitch, no it's not a long walk but with lots of kit it becomes a nuisance and the grass was long so whenever you went to the car, toilet, washing area, your feet were wet, the grass never dried fully the whole weekend, so wet pack up. It's a shame as lovely location and great start, imagine glampers have fun.

From the manager: Thank you for your review and pointing out your likes and dislikes, we strife to welcome all our guest, I am confused at your dislikes as you had the site pretty much to yourselves to enjoy ALL facilities here including the bathroom and free tea/coffee with communal milk in the fridge to help yourself to. The fridge is the only thing we do ask campers to leave for the two Tipi users if they are booked during a stay, there is a cool box and freezer for campers to freeze ice packs in this instance as well as communal milk in the fridge for a brew so I’m bemused at why you would feel unwanted which certainly isn’t reflected in any reviews across our listings here or elsewhere or the case. It is hard to please everyone and on reading that you disliked us also for getting wet feet I understood that we weren’t going to achieve this on this occasion. I think perhaps the smaller pop-up summer sites on a small holding like ours are maybe not for you, these tend to be more of experience to enjoy the animals and quite space rather than pathed footpaths on larger commercial sites which I feel would suit you better. We like to provide a more personal and quiet camping experience. Unfortunately, we can’t concrete the Alpaca paddock with footpaths or control the weather but the grass was mowed just two days prior to your visit so I’m not sure which route you were taking to find this long grass! If walking the less than minute to your pitch was a nuisance, I’m also not sure why you didn’t pick the pitch closest the entrance since I advised you could pick any!

Liked: Lovely little site, as calm and quiet as advertised. The area was beautiful, plenty of nice walks and places to visit - Compton Castle and Berry Pomeroy are a short drive away. Two lovely pubs within walking distance. Would definitely recommend and will definitely be going back.

Showman’s shepherd's hut
Liked: This was booked through pitch-up.com and was easy to use. The contact with the owners leading up to the trip was great, as was the welcome when we arrived. As non-drivers it was tricky to find our way from Totnes but that was our fault and there are easy bus links and a walk (which we eventually found). We'd booked the airstreamer and it was warm and well looked after. There was great facilities inside as well as an outside shower and toilet block. Perfect for our needs. The weather wasn't perfect but on one of the clear nights the stars were beautiful and well worth staying up to observe. There's great links to Totnes and Paignton with a bus ride which is easy to get to (although there is a very busy road). Through the website we'd booked an alpaca walk and this was a highlight of the trip. We spent an hour with the animals walking around the fields and through as copse of trees. The owner was lovely and chatty and it was an experience to remember.

Primitive grass tent campsite
Liked: Good location, just a few minutes drive from Totnes and within easy reach of many coastal and moor destinations. Welcoming and friendly site, both quirky (being a farm with Alpacas, Peacocks, Geese, hens etc) and quiet. Good facilities for campers and glampers. Owners based on site and very warm and helpful. They clearly are enthusiastic and driven to make this site the success it is. We thoroughly enjoyed our 5 night stay and would recommend it to all. Thanks Phil and partner (sorry can't recall name)....as well as Toby and Sam for a fabulous time. All the best for the future and we hope to stay again next time we are in the area.
