  • Friendly site on scenic working farmland
  • In a County Wildlife Site a short distance from Dartmoor
  • Excellent customer service and easy access to walks: maps given out
Photographers and wildlife watchers, get down with haste to Westdown Farm Camping near Dartmoor. Set over 92 acres of working farmland, this is a deeply rural County Wildlife Site, where the hedgerows and fields are left to lie natural with minimal interference from the farm owners so that wildlife can flourish. Snappers and nature spotters have over 30 species of butterflies to spy from these farmlands, among fields rich in wild flowers and grasses, and in a scenic setting about 500 feet above sea level: Dartmoor is viewable from one side of the farm and Exmoor on a clear day from the other. The farm is also home to a pedigree herd of British Longhorn cattle who graze the land and help maintain the diversity of the wildlife. (Dogs are welcome on site, but must stay on leads for the safety of the livestock.) And if you're a cyclist? Wheel your weary self in here too, as the farm is a handy halfway point on National Route 27, running coast to coast on a signed path from Ilfracombe to Plymouth. All is run by Stacey and her team, who pride themselves on tiptop customer service with cleanly-kept amenities and access to woodland and farmland strolls. Maps of the farmland are given out on arrival and guests are welcome to wander and explore as well as meet the animals.

Mystery Woods primitive forest floor tent campsite (no pets, wild)

Liked: We were welcomed by the owners and shown around the pitch. Access to multiple compost toilets around the sites, showers had hot water. We were wild camping in the wooded area. It was so nice and secluded.

Disliked: The only down side was we couldn't park near to where we were camping meaning having to drag everything to the wild site, but the owner let us borrow a wheel barrow.

'Sunset View' primitive grass campsite

Liked: Peaceful, farm, friendly hosts, lovely area, composting toilets. £22 per night

Disliked: Nothing really. If I had to say something it would be that in Sept the sunset is behind trees so not as spectacular as maybe in early summer

'Sunset View' primitive grass campsite

Liked: A beautiful campsite where the “sunset view” pitch really lived up to its name. The site was very tranquil and we enjoyed a wonderful sky at night, complete with shooting stars! Stacey and Richard were very helpful, and we appreciated all their efforts to make the site as eco-friendly as possible. The site is well located for access to Dartmoor and Okehampton. We’d definitely all like to stay there again.

Local attractions

As it's Dartmoor – and Devon – many activities and attractions for all weathers are easy to get to from here, like the Tarka Trail, accessible from the Meeth Quarry Nature Reserve , and the reserve itself, a former clay quarry with two huge lakes, grassland and woodland areas, and bike trails and walking paths. Dartmoor is a must: visit the High Moorland visitor centre in Princetown to hear the Dartmoor story and get inspired by the Dartmoor Timelapse film, find out more about Sherlock Holmes and the Hound of the Baskervilles, or, for kids, dressing up, letting imaginations run riot in the junior Ranger Land Rover or watching the Hairy Hands film in the cinema. Other nearby attractions include the Milky Way theme park, Castle Drogo, Lydford Gorge, Roadford Lake, Parklands indoor pool and Chagford outdoor pool, Exeter Cathedral, Tavistock, Simmons Park, the museum of Dartmoor Life and Okehampton: you'll most certainly not be bored around here… The Westdown Farm Camping team also highly recommends a trot along to the Miniature Pony Centre near Newton Abbot, where kids can visit the paddock to be surrounded by miniature ponies and tiny foals.
