  • Small, peaceful site two miles from Okehampton
  • Coarse fishing lake and enclosed dog walking area on site
  • Shower and toilet block with underfloor heating and accessible area
Make your way to Appledore Park, two miles from Okehampton near the north Devon coast. With 4,500 recently planted trees and hedges (so far), spankingly clean facilities and so many little extra touches, ‘awesome’, ‘top notch’ and ‘knocked our socks off’ are just a few of the accolades Appledore has received from grateful guests. There are nine acres of site land at award-winning Appledore, all with sweet views of the Devon countryside and the park’s surrounding farmland, and landscaped to hold spacious pitches. Dogs are welcome, and handily, there is an enclosed dog walk through the trees or a large field to let them run in. The site's only five minutes' drive away from the A30 road to Cornwall, so it has easy access to the moors and as well as Cornwall, north Devon's beaches. If you’re arriving late, there’s a special late arrivals area with hook-up and water so you can get settled quickly (cuppa). To this smart idea, there is wifi throughout, a washing-up and veg prep area, and a room with charging points and info on the surrounding area. The amenities block has underfloor heating, private cubicles and an accessible area for disabled guests – and are so well maintained they've won a Loo of the Year award. Finally, fancy some fishing? Appledore Park has its own coarse fishing lake for guests and you can also cast off from the quay at Appledore village, take a boat out to the sea (the coast is around 30 miles from the site) or try your luck landing salmon or trout on the River Torridge.

Liked: I booked this campsite, last minute, whilst supporting my husband who was cycling from Lands End to John O Groats (LEJOG). He was camping overnight with the other athletes at Okehampton Show ground and I was travelling in a camper van with our dog. I found Appledore Park online, just 10 minutes drive from the show ground, with an extremely high customer rating. The Wardens, Robert and Linda, were so welcoming, friendly and helpful. I can’t thank them enough for their kindness and hospitality. As a female travelling alone with one dog, they made sure that I was safe and comfortable. The amenities were top notch and absolutely spotless. A spacious and attractive modern shower and toilet block provided powerful hot showers with separate private wash hand cubicles and mirrors. Professional touches with nice hand soap in the toilets, complimentary washing up liquid in the covered plate wash areas and a very high standard of cleanliness throughout were very much appreciated. The dog exercise areas were outstanding and my spaniel loved the securely fenced woodland walk area, as well as the separate secure large field to run off her pent-up energy from travelling for long hours in the camper van. There are plenty of dog poo bins on site in very convenient locations for dog owners too. The campsite is very pretty and there is an abundance of information provided in the laundry room about the local area including a thoughtfully constructed, hand written folder full of good walks to explore. There is also fishing available onsite with a pretty lake that attracts some impressive local wildlife. I spotted a heron patiently fishing by the lake. I cannot recommend this caravan and campsite highly enough. Thank you again for making my short stay feel special and safe with your warmth and friendliness. And, thank you for the ease of use and enjoyment that the perfectly tended communal spaces provided me and my happy spaniel with. Much appreciated and we look forward to seeing you again.

Disliked: There are no dislikes or complaints. When I return, I will request a pitch that is a bit further from the road as the traffic was audible. It’s such a peaceful, pleasant location and the odd bit of traffic on a nearby country road didn’t bother me too much but I was aware of it. Other areas of the campsite are well away from the road and the landscaping includes hedgerows and trees which act as privacy screens and natural noise barriers.

Liked: We recently spent over a week at this site and loved how small, tranquil and peaceful it was! Rob and Lin, the site wardens, were amazing - so helpful and welcoming - they couldn’t do enough for you. We were sad to say bye to them by the end of the trip. The showers/toilets were the cleanest I’ve seen on a site and the use of a family/disabled room was really useful too! This site is greatly adapted if you do need disabled access. It really was a friendly, family site that had thought of lots to make it a home from home. It’s 2 miles into the closest town which has pubs/shops/supermarkets so greatly located for a relaxing time with amenities close by. We’d love to stay again if in the area, thanks!

Local attractions

Start off at Okehampton to see the ruins of 11th-century Okehampton Castle and explore the industrial past of Dartmoor at Finch Foundry, England’s last working water-powered forge. The Museum of Dartmoor Life, an 18th-century mill with info on the moors throughout the ages and a reconstructed Bronze Age fort and Victorian kitchen, is at the town’s West Street. Nearby Castle Drogo, ‘the last to be built in England’, is now a Grade I-listed building looked after by the National Trust, with the Trust’s highest garden, rose gardens and paths snaking below into the gorge of the Teign valley. ‘Perhaps the most famous walk in Dartmoor’ (so says the NT) is the circular walk from Castle Drogo, above the Teign and along Hunters Path to cross the river. The nearest sands are Bude and Widemouth Bay about 45 minutes’ drive away.
