  • Back to basics woodland site in scenic north Devon
  • In the Lee valley, a 15-minute walk from the coast
  • Wildlife haven over 10 acres: look out for deer, foxes and badgers
Craving some good old-fashioned camping, with nothing but a bit of canvas over your head, an open fire to cook on and the sounds of wildlife to keep you company? Pick up your pack and head to Yomer Wood Camping, a back to basics site a couple of minutes’ drive (10 minutes’ walk) from the scenic coastal village of Lee in north Devon. Don’t worry about soothing stays being interrupted by other guests either: there are 10 acres here, and running into the neighbours is far less likely than encountering a badger, fox or deer... When (if?) you feel the need to return to the outside world, the site’s about 15 minutes’ walk from the Devon coast, which is handy for the 630-mile South West Coast Path and the sheltered cove at Lee Bay, and is in the Lee Valley Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. (Time visits just right to find out why the locals call it Fuschia valley…) Yomer Wood is no-frills at its finest: there’s no electricity and certainly no wifi, so you can stay nicely sheltered from social media or other digital distractions. Streams and a pond are to hand for your morning ablutions; there's a compost toilet for your calls of nature, and a rainwater-supplied pot washing area is at your convenience for the scrubbing of saucepans. And for the sizzling of sausages? Campfires are – but of course – fully approved of here. Please note that this site has no parking. Parking is available at the local beach and pub (a 10 to 15-minute walk away).

Please note
  • This park has no on-site shower facilities.
  • Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.
  • Guests are advised to bring a good quality flashlight with them as parts of the park are unlit.
  • Please note that the toilet facilities are unisex.
  • Although there’s parking by the pub and the beach in Lee, there’s no parking next to the site so pack light. there is a privately-owned car park by the village hall about 10 minutes walk from the site. Payment is by cash into the honesty box currently and overnight parking is allowed for the site's campers. At quiet times, it is possible to park on the road next to the site or there is also free parking by the beach - although space is not guaranteed.

Badger primitive grass and earth tent campsite (six person)

Liked: A stunning and idyllic campsite with only three pitches in a beautiful forest. We stayed with our two young kids (5 and 8) during pretty bad weather and still had a magical time. Can't even begin to imagine how magical it is during good weather. Perfect for enjoying nature, listening to the little stream that runs through the wood and the owls at night. It is important to pack light, as you need to carry everything up the mountain for roughly 500m (but it is worth it). The beach in walking distance is really nice and dramatic. Make sure you also stop by the local pub which is absolutely lovely.

Dormouse primitive grass and earth tent campsite (five person)

Liked: An unbelievably peaceful stay at Yomer wood. Other than the first, night we had the whole campsite to ourselves! Spaced out pitches within the forest, beautiful looked after communal spaces and compost toilet, plenty of firewood and a very convenient farm shop near by. Surrounded by nature and amazing wildlife, don’t forget your binoculars! Angus and Kate were lovely and very helpful. Do prepare for the uphill walk if you’re carrying a lot of stuff, we had a little trolly and it made life a lot easier but the hill is manageable and completely worth it for the location. We’ll absolutely be staying here again!

Dormouse primitive grass and earth tent campsite (five person)

Liked: Kate was so helpful when we arrived. There are a few lovely private locations to camp so was peaceful and incredibly unique (love the river shower). Cool group fire area but we setup a fire by the tent and plenty of dry wood we could chop/burn (careful of forest fire) 10min walk to the beach of Lee and a beautiful hike along the coast to Wollacombe (be ready for the hills). Its a hill up to the best pitches so be ready to hike up with kit. Great workout!

Disliked: Flying little beasts come out as the sun drops. We avoided them by returning a little later as they dont hang around. (safe enough by 8 with 9.30pm sunset). A fire is the other option to keep them away.

Local attractions

If watersports and sands appeal, this is a top spot, as the site is 10 minutes’ drive from Woolacombe surfing beach and surfing schools, 20 minutes from Croyde and Putsborough, and 25 minutes from Saunton Sands. And if fingers and toes are crinkled beyond recognition and need some time to dry out? The Museum of British Surfing is 20 minutes from base. Surfing isn’t the only coastal pursuit worth sampling hereabouts… the site is half an hour from Braunton Burrows, the largest sand dune system in the UK and the country’s first biosphere reserve. A handful of scenic coastal towns and villages are also within easy reach: make a trip to the nearest of these, Ilfracombe (10 minutes away), to explore the Victorian seaside town and harbour. Finally, turn away from the ocean and make tracks inland for Exmoor National Park (20 minutes) and its 620 miles of footpaths and bridleways, its cycle paths and climbing routes, and its canoeing and kayaking. Prefer to spend some time among exotic wildlife? Exmoor Zoo is less than half an hour away.
