  • Relaxed family campsite on the western edge of Exmoor National Park
  • Five minutes' drive to Ilfracombe; Woolacombe 10 minutes
  • Kids' play area and small-on site shop for essentials
For memorable breaks by the gorgeous Devon coast, turn to Sunset View Camping, a family-friendly site just to the west of Exmoor National Park. It's incredibly easy to get down to the coast from here, whether you're planning a spot of fish and chips in Ilfracombe (five minutes' drive), beachside wanders in Woolacombe (10 minutes) or surfing at Saunton Sands (20 minutes). Sunset View Camping is a relaxed spot, with views over a rolling Devon landscape of green hills and farmland. It's a modern site in terms of amenities, with well-maintained toilets and showers plus nice extras like a kids' play area where little explorers can burn off some steam. Handily, there's also a small on-site shop for essentials (open from 9 to 5 daily), while just across the road there's The Depot Eatery, a pub-restaurant highly recommended by the Sunset View team. Staying on site and barbecuing your own dinner is another possibility, as cook-outs (with proper safety precautions) are also allowed. Four-legged friends are welcome here, but please keep them on leads at all times and do not take them into the kids' play area or shower block.

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked: Nice and helpful staff who assisted us late at night Location good for Ilfracombe, Croyde, Woollacombe, Combe Martin.

Disliked: Facilities basic - simple sink next to 2 showers/toilets so often a queue. Camping on a slope Lovely sunset as stated in name!

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked: Lots of space to pitch. Clean facilities given how wet the weather was. Friendly staff. Good price. Depot eatery across the road is great for food and drinks!

Disliked: A separate toilet to the showers would be nice, to reduce queues. Close to the road and a traveling circus so it was a bit noisy.

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked: - The person running the site (Alfie) was really helpful and welcoming. - The field had plenty of space. - Next door to Football Golf which the children really enjoyed. - Less than 10mins drive to Woolacombe and Ilfracombe.

Disliked: - Only 2 toilet/shower combination cabins which didn't have lights in unless the generator was running, so needed a torch in the evening and one of them didn't have a window so in the daytime needed a torch too. - Toilets/shower cabins didn't have anywhere to put things when showering and the floor was regularly covered in cut grass. It was also wet most of the time as not many people seemed to tidy up after themselves (one person was even taking their dog in there!) - Hot water only available when the generator was running in specified time slots (no hot water available at the washing up sink). - Busy main road next to the site (although this made it handy to get to places!)

Disliked: No shop. Awful toilet and shower only turned on 2 hrs in the morning, 2 hrs in the evening. Play area was a broken football goal. Reception - what reception.

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked: The view was amazing, staff were attentive and very relaxed although there was a 10pm curfew for general chit chat when asking staff if we could be situated in an area where we would be allowed to do so later they were more than happy to do so

Disliked: Shower was only active between 8-10am and 6-8pm and could imagine in busy terms being a struggle to get a shower. I would say this site is perfect for its simplicity if you want a feeling of traditional camping with limited resources then it is perfect however toilets and shower could be upgraded with a permanent block/fixture.

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked: Sunsets were beautiful around the wet weather. Perfect base for visiting lots of North Devon.

Disliked: The field needs more maintenance for getting around the field as it’s quite a slope. No lighting in the toilet/shower cubes in the evening.

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked: We stayed at Sunset View for 2 nights and arrived late due to poor weather. Harvey called ahead of our arrival and suggested we pitch at the bottom for maximum shelter. Once pitched, Ben came down and introduced himself and suggested we knock on his caravan anytime if we needed anything. The toilets were decent, we didn’t try the showers as we were only there for 2 days. Ben went above and beyond to accommodate us on the Saturday after a rather windy night on Friday, he suggested we could take his surf board and wetsuit to the beach if we wanted too. What a legend! This is their first season and they’re already talking about improvements, what could they do better, I would highly recommend this campsite to anyone staying in the region of Ilfracombe, Woolacombe and Croyde. Cheap accommodation ran by people who care about people. Big up Ben! From Mark, JJ and the lads.

Local attractions

The local area is packed with family-friendly activities, including Foot Golf North Devon, a nine-hole course a few hundred yards from the site where fans of football and/or golf can get the whole family involved. There's also a 'real' golf range (with a driving range) within five minutes' drive, as well as two shooting ranges and a quad bike course. And that's not even mentioning all the activities and attractions on offer a couple of miles away at the coast. Starting off in Ilfracombe (five minutes), there's a number of small, inviting beaches and an attractive harbour, while other nearby spots like Woolacombe (10 minutes) and Saunton Sands (20 minutes) have lot of space for sports like surfing or horse riding (head to the riding stables in Woolacombe). If you want to head further off shore, it's also possible to organise nature-spotting sea safaris or sea fishing day trips (both on offer in Ilfracombe; five minutes). Expeditions to windswept Lundy Island out in the Bristol Channel are also possible, with sailings departing from either Ilfracombe (five minutes) or Bideford (40 minutes) depending on the timetable.
