  • Quiet rural site on a working farm 10 minutes' drive from Honiton
  • A 15-minute drive from Seaton, Sidmouth and the South West Coast Path
  • Farm produce and tea room on site for homemade meals and takeaway food
Foodies who fancy a farm break, step this way… Bovey's Down Farm is a place where it’s possible to eat very well indeed. This rural site on a working beef farm in the East Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, 10 minutes’ drive from Honiton. And with that setting comes some splendid feasting material: pick up home-cooked cakes, pies, traditional pasties and homemade burgers from the farmhouse kitchen to eat at the picnic area, or settle in for drinks, lunches, cream teas and evening meals in the tea room or beer garden. You can also acquire bread, ribeye steaks and gluten-free sausages from the site for an evening barbecue or campfire brekkie. Once suitably fed and watered, there’s plenty to do nearby: you can get down to the Devon coast (and the resorts of Sidmouth and Seaton) in about 15 minutes’ drive, get out and about for walks/bike rides on the many country lanes and bridleways in the area or play a round of golf a couple of miles away. Getting a taste of farm life is pretty straightforward too: guests can join owner Gerald for a walking tour to meet the Aberdeen Angus cattle, ducks and hens and pick up tips on the wildlife that can be spotted around the place (lots of birdlife and the occasional fox or badger…) Facilities on site include toilets, showers, a launderette, a washing-up area and a free wifi connection to help you plan all those days out.

Liked: Wonderful campsite with the perfect amenities and more including fridge, freezer, microwave and washing machine! The hosts were fantastic, so friendly, knowledgeable and genuinely lovely people. Before our stay they were in contact with us regarding the weather and the site conditions, advising us to bring wellies which were a needed due to the British weather! We had a cracking stay in all of England’s wind and rainy glory! They did awesome cooked breakfast, served local cider and ales and have a fab area. You can pay on arrival to hire a fire pit and they provide a bin of dried fire wood on a trolley to transport. Everything was so good! Would definitely return.

Liked: The food was nice ,and it was close to where we wanted to visit .

Disliked: We felt that they could do more for the site,eg .. the water for washing up was cold, and we feel perhaps they could put gravel down for the tracks and pitches as it was very wet and muddy ,fair enough there was a tractor to pull you in and out ,but they could improve it .

From the manager: Good evening, thank you for your review. Our camping site is grass pitches on a working farm, as shown, not a park with driveways and roads.(so many sites were still closed from the winter) The relentless wet weather this winter has made the conditions difficult. All campers last Wednesday had emails making you aware of the conditions. We could have closed the site but that would have spoilt the Easter break for every one. Also at the same time Gerald (76) & Jake working in the rain applied a further 8 tons of hard core(£ 600 ) to make an extra track across the camp field, ( we did similar at half term) first having to temp fence off at least 20 pitches as they were under water. We were trying really hard to make every-ones holiday happen over a wet weekend. When I did my cleaning shift Saturday morning I cleaned the wash up sinks & both had plenty of running hot water , if the system changed mentioning it at the time would have been good as we always have a replacement unit for instant fitting. Most guests made the very best of the situation and enjoyed what we had to offer, noticing the huge effort we put in for the campers.Gerald was extra busy as had to do his regular farm work but still spent a lot of time on site with campers. Obviously our site is not for you, we wish you well on your future travels. Pam and Gerald.

Liked: Owners Pam and Gerald couldn’t have been more accommodating, unfortunately the weather has been very wet recently and they emailed in advance to warn the site would be muddy. They also moved us to hard standing at no extra charge providing electric hook up to match our needs. Gerald checked we were settling in ok and facilities were as expected in terms of showers and toilets etc. basic campsite with a homely touch added. We only stayed for one night but steak at dinner was amazing but service was at a more steady pace as it appeared that Pam and Gerald were doing it all. Hats off to them and the setting would be much more enjoyable in drier weather. Our children enjoyed seeing some animals on the farm, don’t expect polished facilities and play parks that you would get with the likes of Parkdean, but it gives you everything you need to get a night off the beaten track

Disliked: Facilities were a little rough and ready with concrete floors etc, made it slightly more difficult to deal with children. Couldn’t find the advertised baby change but I didn’t ask about it either

From the manager: Good morning. Thank you for taking the time to review. It was a hugely tough weekend keeping the site open with the recent bad weather, we are a grass site but the lucky ones could come onto the hard surfaces to pitch up.Being a farm Gerald was always on site with his tractor to getting vehicles on and off. We keep the Swallows Rest area with concrete floors purposely so campers can come and go in their outside footwear and not have any worries. There are 3 toilets and showers with a lino finish including the family/baby change room that is situated forward of your pitch just to the left of the Swallows rest door. ( on your welcome letter i think it says near the commercial kitchen) Service for the bar and restaurant was also challenging Friday evening as our front of house was unexpectedly unable to be there and couldn't let me know until after 9pm, but as usual we pushed on and coped,Saturday we were back on course. Please ask for things that are not always obvious , we are here to help you enjoy your stay. We hope to see you back again one day. Pam & Gerald.

Liked: Our second stay here. Great site with wonderful views and clean basic facilities. Plus added bonus of a restaurant on site with great farm food. Fab breakfast and wonderful steak from the farm shop. It was lovely they moved us to a hard standing flat pitch (car park) as the weather was just so wet and windy. They do have a tractor if you get stuck! Owners are just lovely. Not forgetting a new wifi system across the site.

Disliked: The site is on a grassy slope but it does mean you get great views but a bit hazardous in the wet.

Local attractions

Once you’ve met the animals on site, get set to say hi to some more furry pals at The Donkey Sanctuary (10 minutes’ drive) before greeting some rather more exotic beasts at Axe Valley Wildlife Park (20 minutes) and Yarak Birds of Prey (half an hour). Trading countryside for coast is a fine idea for a day or two as well – it’ll take you around 15 minutes to drive down to Seaton or Sidmouth for beach days, paddles and strolls on the South West Coast Path. Lovely Lyme Regis (25 minutes) is another fab option – sign up for fishing trips here and you might be lucky enough to take home a fistful of mackerel for tea. Got a bit more time to fill? How about a day of horse riding (five minutes), floral wanders at Burrow Farm Gardens (20 minutes) and Bicton Park Botanical Gardens (25 minutes) or a whole heap of outdoor rides, indoor soft play areas and shows at Crealy Theme Park (half an hour)? Lyme Bay Winery is 20 minutes away too, should you need a tipple to go with your evening barbecue…
