  • Peaceful and secluded farm site with views of Dartmoor
  • Over 30 acres of farmland with woodland walks from the site
  • Wildlife haven: spot red and roe deer, badgers and buzzards
Searching for a Devon getaway close to the beach and to Dartmoor and where the whole family is welcome? Look no longer… make tracks for Hollocombe Hideaway, a family- and dog-friendly site half an hour’s drive from the coast at Widemouth Bay and with views of Dartmoor from the grounds. The site covers over 30 acres of woodland, including woodland walks where the owners regularly spot red deer, roe deer and the resident sett of badgers. The tall trees next to the site stream are home to buzzards that frequently soar overhead. Off site, the farm’s setting down a quiet country lane five minutes from Hollacombe and Holsworthy is in rural countryside with walks along fields starting directly from the grounds. It’s 15 miles from the farm to the sands of Widemouth Bay, for sunbathing, swimming and lunches or afternoon tea at the nearby cafés as well as picnics at the secluded bays along the coast from here. Just along the bay from Widemouth is a beach where dogs are allowed all year round. The site’s also within easy reach (25 minutes’ drive) of the seaside resort of Bude, with its wide sandy beaches gently sloping to the sea. Bude beaches are lifeguarded in high season and are a popular destination for family surfing as surf schools offer lessons and kit hire. Inland, Dartmoor is half an hour’s drive away and Tavistock with its weekly markets, art galleries, museum and independent shops is within 45 minutes.

Liked: Really good communication before we arrived letting us know that the grass pitch we booked was wet so may need to park on a hardstand pitch instead and gave options of what was available. Natasha then came and introduced herself when we were settled and she was very friendly and helpful. Really quiet site with wonderful views and a very laidback atmosphere. Toilets and showers were very clean. Overall a very pleasant stay and great campsite.

Primitive grass campsite

Liked: Views were lovely! The hardstanding pitch was wide enough for us to move the van so that when we unfolded the Tentbox, our heads would be uphill. The toilets are roomy and comfortable. The owner was really welcoming and fussed all three of our dogs. Fish and chips from nearby town, do delivery to site

Primitive grass campsite

Liked: I was so happy to arrive at this beautiful little site, wasn't sure where to park when I arrived so called the owner (natasha) who answered in seconds to direct me. The views are amazing and nowhere near the road so very peaceful. The facilities were spacious and super clean. The shower room I used had a hotel feel rather than campsite. Outside wash up area with everything washing liquid, bowl and clothes supplied. Met Natasha in the morning, beautiful soul that would most probably do anything to accommodate you. Loved the potted mint, thyme etc which was for visitors to use. Lovely walks, lovely locations for a picnic. Pick up your supplies in Holsworthy if you're planning to chill for a few days. It's called the hide away for a reason. Loved it!! I will be back for sure and so reasonable

Disliked: That I couldn't stay longer

From the manager: Thank you Ann. I really do appreciate the time you took to leave a review. It is so important to let other guests or potential guests know about the good, the bad and everything in between. I really do love my job and work hard to maintain high standards of cleanliness, thank you for appreciating it. I do hope I get the chance to welcome you back, it would be lovely to see you again.

Powered cement/asphalt and grass travel trailer campsite

Liked: Basic site in terms of facilities, BUT the toilet and shower block were ALWAYS clean which is fantastic for a private run campsite, cleanliness better than most other campsites I have been too. Views were brilliant. Staff were really friendly and helpful, often chatting when we saw them out and about. Really flexible on check-out time, we left at 6pm on the day of check-out (assumably because there wasn't anyone else due on our pitch that day). Offers for wood, kindling, marshmallows which the kids loved. Will return without a doubt.

Local attractions

If your holidays are incomplete without a beach day or two, you'll be well chuffed with this location. The site is 25 minutes’ drive from the nearest beach (Summerleaze, in Bude), and other sandy stretches at Crooklets and Sandymouth Bay are within half an hour; all three are good picks for surfing, sea fishing, swims and sandy strolls. When a break from sea, surf and (perhaps) sun is needed, stick around Bude to wander along the canal towpaths, call in at the castle – where there’s a history museum and art gallery – or have a taste tour (self guided) of the town’s many eateries. Days in urban environs aren’t limited to Bude either… There are plenty of scenic villages worth exploring up and down the coast, none more so than the privately owned, blessedly car free and most pretty cobblestoned village of Clovelly, 40 minutes from base. Nature-filled hours are a cinch hereabouts too: the site is 35 minutes from the edge of Dartmoor National Park and – for a bit more order – RHS Garden Rosemoor is within half an hour. A little stuffy for younger tastes? It’s 20 minutes’ drive to the Gnome Reserve and Wildlife Garden in West Putford.
