  • Warm and welcoming family-run site near Exmoor National Park
  • Hiking, climbing, canoeing, angling and stargazing within easy reach
  • Remote park with plenty of green space and spectacular Exmoor views
If you plan on venturing to Devon for spectacular walks, historic hotspots and outdoorsy pursuits – and perhaps for wide open space, remoteness, a friendly vibe and meticulously manicured grounds to boot – make Zeacombe House Caravan Park your next Devon base. Just south of the spectacular landscapes of Exmoor National Park, Zeacombe has pitches on a lushly landscaped park lined with pristine lawns and dotted with mature trees, shrubs and rockeries, bordered partly by ancient beech hedging. Bring four-legged pals along to enjoy it too: this is a pooch-friendly place that allows dogs around the grounds as long as their humans keep them on their leads and clean up any doings. There's also a dedicated dog walking area where they can romp about off lead (please do keep gates shut and check your hound isn't going to find any ways to plot an escape). Zeacombe is a 12-minute drive from Dulverton, hailed as the southern gateway to Exmoor. You can pick up supplies (and gifts, and souvenirs) here, or bag them from the little shop on site selling essential groceries and camping bits; barbecues are allowed on your spacious pitch. The amenities on site are kept to spotless standards and include roomy shower rooms with lashings of hot water, a laundry room, a washing-up area and plenty of spots for bins and recycling.

Liked: Very peaceful and nicely landscaped. Our dogs enjoyed the dog field being able to run off lead. We were offered tea or coffee on arrival. Facilities were a bit outdated but clean.

Liked: Stayed at Zeacombe for 4 nights. We liked that you could choose your own pitch and it's a very laid back atmosphere. Check out is whenever you like on the day. There is a small shop on site that sells essentials. The facilities are clean but the showers are way too hot, especially for little ones, I think thermostat needs to be adjusted a bit. I really enjoyed the pizza truck that came on Sunday. It was one of the best pizzas I've ever had. I also really liked that you can have BBQs and campfires there. They also sell bags of logs and rent out fire pits if you need. The road next to he campsite is not noisy at all so that was not an issue. Lovely rural feel to the campsite.

Disliked: Showers are too hot and one of showers didn't stop for well over 15/20 mins which steamed up the whole block, think more ventilation or door needs to be able to be propped open. Some signage on the water outlets at the toilet block would be great as it doesn't indicate if it's drinking water or not. The taps dotted around inside the campsites are signed though.

Liked: As soon as we pulled up we were asked if we wanted a cuppa and after being stuck on the M5 for 5 hours it was greatly appreciated. The choice of pitching where we wanted to was a great start. The bathrooms were spotless and the showers were nice and hot. The shop on site is an added bonus and it's well stocked even with logs for the fire. It's a great little campsite the owners are great, we couldn't fault it. We will be adding this one to the list to come again

Disliked: Absolutely nothing

Liked: Very clean campsite, our first in the caravan, lovely and quiet, toilet block was very clean and had multiple showers. There is a road nearby, but there is hardly any cars passing especially at night.

Disliked: Showers were scolding and didnt have a temperature dial.

Liked: "Our first trip in our new camper van was fantastic thanks to the helpful staff at the campsite. The toilet and shower block was clean and well-maintained, and there was a washing facility with a washing machine. Everything was easy to locate, and there was a variety of pitches with electric hookups. We really enjoyed our stay."

Powered grass campsite

Liked: Very friendly site. Easy going, no set pitches. You are invited to look around and find a place you fancy. Not penny pinching. Electric hookups and lovely hot water included in the price. Free showers that are the best I've experienced on a camp site and a clean toilet block. Plenty of space. A good camp shop on site and again not hugely expensive. There is a road runs past that some have reported as noisy. It's a rat run and only a little noisy at peak times, it's a small lane and really wasn't a disturbance. We wouldn't hesitate to go back if holidaying in the area again.

Disliked: Be careful not to get caught out with lack of toilet paper. We took our own and it wasn't a problem. It is a little remote and we often spent 45 to 60+ mins driving to get to attractions but the cost and overall this is a small price to pay. Nearest large supermarket is around 20+ mins away but with a shop on site and having to drive out to attractions this wasn't an issue, just combine the two.

Liked: The size of the site was good, you could reach the shop and facilities easily. The shop/reception area also served ice cream & there was a dog area for letting the dog off if you wish. The couple running the site were very friendly and helpful.

Disliked: The children’s play area was a small enclosed piece of grass- however wasn’t a major bad thing as the kids just played next to the pitch. The facilities were in need of a clean, as people who had used them before had left them in a mess- clumps of hair in the shower and on the walls, toilets not flushing properly.

From the manager: Thank you for your comments. We're sorry to see that you won't stay again or recommend us. Our shower block is cleaned regularly throughout the day. It would be impossible to clean after every use of the showers. There is one toilet in the ladies out of 5 that doesn't flush properly, we are awaiting parts to fix this, however it doesn't stop the toilet from being used. We don't advertise a play park for children. The play area is a space for the children to play together, whether it be sitting chatting, playing various ball games etc. It is there to try and prevent children playing next to pitches as they often went onto other pitches and the balls hitting other people's caravans, to which they had to be told to move away and play in the area provided! There are other sites that have playgrounds, children's facilities such as games rooms, arcades etc. Fortunately that is not us, we like children to enjoy the fresh air. We will take your comments on board and see how we can improve on that.

Local attractions

Zeacombe’s local town of Dulverton is a handsome settlement between the Barle and Exe rivers, with central streets lined with boutique and gift shops, tearooms and various other watering holes and eateries. While you’re over that way, the Dulverton Circular Walk spans three and a half miles of an upstream route alongside part of the Barle valley from the town, taking trampers over Marsh Bridge and gently ascending along an ancient byway before returning back down along another byway back into Dulverton. Plenty more highly scenic hiking trails network the rest of Exmoor National Park’s thousands of acres of moorland, forested valleys and high coastal heathland. Ancient Dunster Castle a 40-minute drive away also comes with subtropical gardens home to four different microclimates, as well as a restored 18th-century working watermill among a peaceful river garden. To arrive in style, take the vintage steam locomotive carriage on the West Somerset Railway from Bishops Lydeard, 45 minutes’ drive from base, via some cracking coastal views along the way. Elsewhere, the famed north Devon surf spots of Saunton Sands, Croyde and Woolacombe are all within an hour’s drive.
