Like your holidays quiet, rural and preferably within walking distance of the sea? Pitch up at Leonards Cove Holiday Park, a Devon site within easy strolling distance of the south-west beach of Blackpool Sands. The clear waters and long shingle stretch here are within the South Devon National Landscape: as you might reckon, miles' worth of similarly scenic beaches are close to this cove too. You'll also be a mere 10 minutes' drive from the old seadog port of Dartmouth, and within 50 at most from family days out at famed attractions like Paignton Zoo, Pennywell Farm and Woodlands Family Theme Park, five miles from Dartmouth. Leonards Cove is a peaceful, popular and roomy place, with spectacular sea views from many parts of the site and excellent stargazing at night when the conditions are clear. Its main hub is the Trattoria Spaggia bar-restaurant, which dishes up meals for those who want to eat in; if not, takeaways are available, and there's a well-stocked shop on site for any additional foodie bits. For amenities, there's a washing-up area, freezer pack storage and a freshwater tap, as well as fully-serviced toilet and shower blocks with free hot water. And finally... barbecues are allowed on site: even if you have an aversion to charring sausages over the flames, sitting back here for alfresco eats among the lush backdrop of a south Devon sunrise is pretty much a must.

  • It's very difficult to get TV signal from a normal aerial on the touring field, due to the site's remote location: the site owners recommend that guests bring a satellite receiver.

Liked Location was great, facilities clean, Trattoria restaurant lovely, very convenient for buses to Dartmouth / Torcross etc

Disliked Nothing particularly, end of season so ground was a little soft. You will need levelling ramps but we struggled a bit with the wooden ones on site as the soft ground meant we needed to be careful they didn’t touch the underside of the van as we drove on/off

Disliked the view on the Sea is blocked by the many mobile homes/ caravans. Also the quietness is disturbed by some heat pump noise…

Liked The scenery, location and staff exceptionally friendly. Had a great experience at the Italian restaurant too! Definitely recommend for a meal.

Disliked The tent pitches are on a slope, so spent much of the night having to shuffle back up the beds.
The village church bells also go on the hour and every half an hour… including throughout the night. Not great unless you can get to sleep easily!

Liked We love this campsite albeit our 6th time of studying over the past few years and this was by far the busiest but tents were all fab but parking was chaotic!

Disliked The amount of cars parked..literally everywhere and every piece of spare land was parked upon so when we returned on saturday eve after being out for the eve there was literally nowhere to park around and around we drove and had to squeeze in a tiny spot in the side of the road/driveway!

Disliked Sounds of road and car passing the camping pitches, pitches close to rubbish area that you could smell rubbish when outside your tent which was a real shame.

It's about 20 minutes' walk along the peaceful coast path to get to Blackpool Sands, where you can stretch out on your beach towel, fill up at the beach café, or rent kayaks and paddleboards to get out onto the water. After that, it's a short drive to plentiful highlights and family days out around Devon, such as to the castle and steam railway of Dartmouth, 10 minutes' drive away; the county's biggest amusement park Woodlands Family Theme Park, within 15 minutes, and rambles around the waters of the Dart estuary, just below Dartmouth Castle. Pennywell Farm, the activities and spectacular scenery of Dartmoor, the Splashdown Quaywest waterpark, Torquay and Kents Cavern, and the Buckfast Butterfly Farm and Dartmoor Otter Sanctuary are all within 45—50 minutes' drive.
