  • Devon site with views out over Exmoor’s hills and Combe Martin bay
  • A 10-minute drive from Combe Martin beaches and 15 from Ilfracombe
  • Wildlife haven circled by woodland; shared barbecue and firepit area
Seeking somewhere secluded yet not too remote? Guyscliffe Farm is just the ticket for a top trip. Set high above Combe Martin, overlooking the hills of Exmoor National Park and Combe Martin bay, it’s close to the coast, countryside and a dreamy Devon village. The site is known for its friendly vibe – mostly thanks to the hard work of semi-retired owners Caron and Tony, who have years of hospitality experience under their belts from running a B&B in Bristol. They’re on hand to help you organise your trip, whether you’re after a quiet beach break or adventure-filled forays around Exmoor (15 minutes’ drive). Surrounded by extensive land and woods, Guyscliffe Farm has direct access to several hikes. One of the best walks in the area – through the Valley of Rocks, a steep natural vale dotted with rock pinnacles carved out during the Ice Age – takes half an hour to reach, but the South West Coast Path is less than 10 minutes away for relaxed roams closer by. Wherever you choose to stretch your legs, gather around the logburner in the barbecue area back on base while surveying the spectacular sea view. Or expend even more energy by strolling around on site – there’s plenty of scope to watch the wildlife that often scampers across the vast grounds. Note that the driveway to the site is steep and windy but worth the drive (they once had a double decker bus up there.)

Local attractions

During days on site when the wind’s blowing in the right direction, it’s said you can hear the lions, wolves and monkeys from the nearby Combe Martin Wildlife & Dinosaur Park. Rather admire animals than listen to them? Then head five minutes’ drive down the road over to this zoo or drop by the aquarium in Ilfracombe’s harbour (15 minutes). While at this seaside spot, you can’t miss the 63-foot-high Verity Statue towering over town. Snap a photo of the striking structure, then – if it’s high tide – take a dip in the natural Victorian bathing pools at its feet. Brimming with marine life and a touch warmer than the sea, they’re stellar for snorkelling. To set eyes on other coastal creatures, take a boat trip from Ilfracombe and see the seals basking on the mainland, or speed towards Lundy Island for a chance of sighting seabirds, porpoises and dolphins. Back on dry land, the twin villages of Lynton and Lynmouth (half an hour) – linked by a Victorian-era water-powered railway – are also well worth a look.

Powered grass tent campsite

Liked: A small quiet campsite with a breathtaking view of Combe Martin, the hills and the sea. Just opened so we were honoured to be their first ever customers! The campsite is very cleverly equipped. Automatic lights allow walking to the facilities without the need of a head torch at night. The toilets, shower and washing block is well designed with plenty of hot water. The fire pit/BBQ area is just lovely, with a beautiful view and Pic nic benches. Caron and her husband are lovely and friendly people with plenty of suggestions for local walks! Would definitely use again and recommend without reservation!

Disliked: Nothing really. Just important to keep in mind that the pitches are on the small side and placed at the side of a hill. The pitches are flat but the access is not, to be kept into account especially when loading/unloading equipment. It can get windy. We pitched in quite strong wind and had to use 3-4 pegs on the key points of the tent. Could have done with storm straps. Definitely not good for ball games 😁

From the manager: Thank you both for being our first customers from pitch up. arriving in the windy weather but lucky the weather changed for you and gave you some beautiful pictures. Take care and look forward to seeing you again
