  • On a working farm in the north Devon countryside
  • A five-minute drive to Saunton Sands
  • Free hot showers and well-kept amenities
A five-minute drive to Saunton Sands... then back for lashings of free hot water under the shower and settling down on your chosen pitch to spark up a campfire under the north Devon sky... the peeps at Branton's Fairlinch Camping reckon they do a 'classic camping experience' here, and they're surely, definitely, right. Set on a working farm in north Devon coastal countryside, Fairlinch has its camping in an open field that's actively farmed throughout the year and left unmarked so that guests can pick their own pitch (take your time; there are some splendid views). It's a friendly place where the team is always on hand to answer questions or dispense info for guests to get the most out of their hol whatever their tastes (beaches, most likely). The amenities – powerful electric showers and strong flush toilets – are cleanly kept and there's also ice pack freezing or mobile charging if you need it. And – of course – both campfires and barbecues are allowed.

Primitive grass campsite

Liked: The views were beautiful. The location was great for us to go surfing in Saunton Sands. We loved all the wildlife we saw swifts, a barn owl and lots of bats. The stars were brilliant too we stayed up and saw a shooting start. We will definitely come back. The facilities were basic but showers were clean and hot

Primitive grass campsite

Liked: Vast space where you can pitch anywhere. Toilet facilities were clean and always well stocked through out the days. Didn’t use the showers but there was a good number and they were clean. Close proximity to braunton and beaches.

Disliked: Some better signage would be great on certain things, for example if there is drinking water, a sign stating that would be good.

Primitive grass campsite

Liked: Available space, proximity to beach, helpful staff, freezer, phone charging, hot showers (but cubicles rather small for families with young children).

Disliked: Toilets not cleaned properly (especially under the seat) and one broken seat. No cover over washing up area and variable hot water supply. No mirrors in the showers and some of the toilets. Nettles in the field which wasn't particularly flat. Traffic through Braunton!

Primitive grass campsite

Liked: Love this campsite. It’s basic but has everything you need! It’s in fab location for Saunton, Croyde and Braunton. With so much space to choose where to pitch your tent, you never feel on top of other families.

Disliked: Could do with some hand towels in the toilet block.

Local attractions

To the beach first, natch: the four magnif sandy surfing beaches of Saunton Sands, Putsborough, Woolacombe and Ilfracombe are all under 15 minutes' drive from Fairlinch Camping, and surf schools are around close by too if you haven't yet dipped a toe in the foam. The two closest villages to Fairlinch are Braunton and Croyde, both with a good choice of shops, pubs and restaurants, and both on the South West Coast Path for hikes among more magnif scenery. More hikes as well as bike rides are at the nearby Tarka Trail, the 180-mile route taken by the eponymous otter; if you're picking it up at Braunton, the 31-mile section between between Braunton and Meeth is level and car-free so should suit all cycling sorts.
