  • Glamping on a family-run farm in the north Devon countryside
  • Two miles from the Tarka Trail; half an hour's drive from surf beaches
  • Barbecue area on site; village pub a 10-minute walk away
Canvas and coast and country views, a cracking pub just down the road… and a complete lack of need to set up somewhere to stay. That’s the splendid deal at Canvas and Coast at Whitemoor Farm, a glamping site on a family-run farm a few miles from the north Devon coast. Roll up here and all will be ready for your arrival in your furnished bell tent, meaning you can get on with the important business of the day. Deciding what that will be is up to you: it might involve firing up the barbecue to grill your dinner while taking in the Taw valley views, or possibly taking a stroll to say hi to the horses, sheep and chickens that have become your new neighbours. Or of course, you might be just itching to get out and about into the gorgeous surrounds, taking a walk or bike ride down the Tarka Trail, bimbling off to Barnstaple (two miles away) on the bus or hitting the sands and surf of Saunton Sands and Croyde, both of which are about half an hour’s drive away. Back at base, there’s a bathroom block with hot showers to hose away the seawater, and a borehole that brings forth fresh filtered water to drink. For something rather stronger to sip, wander down to the village of Bishops Tawton, 10 minutes away, for pints and pub food at the thatched 15th-century inn.

Local attractions

Let's start with the coast… there are some real stunners of beaches around here, including the surf hotspots of Saunton Sands and Croyde, both of which are about a half-hour drive away. If you’ve so far been singularly unable to stand up on a surfboard, enlist the help of one of the surf schools in either place to give you some tips. Want some less energetic waves? Try the beaches at Westward Ho! (20 minutes) or Woolacombe (35 minutes). Up for some inland activity? Bring bikes, hire them locally or head out on foot to take in the Tarka Trail, a 32-mile stretch of traffic-free path that passes through Barnstaple and follows the journey of Henry Williamson’s Tarka the Otter. More walks or rides? Head to Exmoor National Park (25 minutes) or climb Codden Hill (45 minutes' walk) for fab views. Those who are out and about with the small sorts might like to check out The Big Sheep amusement park (20 minutes' drive), the Milky Way Adventure Park (half an hour) and Exmoor Zoo (25 minutes), where you can sign up to cuddle some of the cuter creatures.
