  • Peaceful site on a working farm 15 minutes' drive from Barnstaple
  • Part of the 2,700-acre National Trust Arlington estate
  • Exmoor National Park and Devon beaches within half an hour's drive
South Town Farm is a small and friendly north Devon site is on a 200-acre working farm, part of the spectacular 2,700-acre National Trust Arlington estate and its miles of footpaths through woods and farmland. Pitches are spread across two roomy fields, with plenty of space for relaxation or running about. This is a site for families who want to play games, roam around nature spotting, build campfires and stargaze; it's all safe and secure too, as the pitches are kept car free; the only wheels allowed on this patch are attached to the wheelbarrows used for transporting your kit. It’s highly likely that you’ll want to utilise some of this space for a cookout, and you’re most welcome to do so if you bring your own barbecue or firepit. The site also has a limited number of complimentary firepits you can borrow and logs can be purchased on site. As it's an off-grid site, you’ll want to bring a torch along too, to avoid late-night stumbles as you make your way to the compost toilets and warm showers. As well as being a good spot for local wanders, South Town Farm’s handily placed for roaming the Exmoor National Park and the beaches of the Devon coast. Barnstaple, 15 minutes away, is the place for your town amenities, including supermarkets, restaurants and pubs serving food; even closer to home, a farm shop is within five minutes' drive.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked: Everything! This site perfectly encapsulated what we were looking for as a family…camping in nature with enough facilities for it to be comfortable but without masses of other campers surrounding you! The facilities were immaculate and we loved the shower in particular, perfect temp and just the right size space for families who may need to help little ones wash and get changed. The site itself was so peaceful, everyone abided by the curfew and we enjoyed being around like-minded campers. My little boy loved the washing up shed with the blackboard of information/facts (the slug facts were particularly fun!). All the suggestions for what to do in the areas were so helpful especially as the weather wasn’t great for our stay. We can’t wait to visit again!!

Disliked: Zilch. We loved it all!

From the manager: Thank you so much for the review, I'm glad to hear that you liked the slug facts! We look forward to welcoming you back sometime.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked: The best camp site (of many) I've ever been to. Friendly, small and tranquil, only 10 pitches spaced well out (defined, mown pitches amongst the meadow ) across 2 large fields with lovely views, all facing sunset across beautiful meadow. Keeps things simple (has composting loos, simple warm shower, simple washing up, firepit and logs, recycling and a freezer for ice blocks) but all done with thought and care, very clean and well maintained. We liked that no cars allowed into fields (wheelbarrows to move kit a short way, easy), kids can run free safely (and no dogs) . Beautiful walk around farm land and woods, lots of nature on show, and dark skies for star gazing. Wonderful for a family, back to nature but comfortable. Dani (sorry on my spelling!) and Murray are friendly and helpful, answered a thousand questions about their farm from my daughters. Particularly liked the little washing up hut with maps, local information and Dani's facts of the day (tide times, places to go, life cycle of slugs...!). Thank you both, we hope to return soon and enjoy more of this beautiful area. Aug 2024.

Disliked: Nothing to fault. Note...I put 5 stars against 'wifi' as there's no option on this website to put "who wants wifi on a eco friendly, natural farm campsite?!?!" Didn't want that to drag the score down. No, of course, there isn't any.

From the manager: Wow! Thank you for putting so much thought into this amazing review! It was a pleasure to have all of you on site - and we always love answering questions about our farm. Hoping to see you again in the future.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked: Great view. Peaceful location, and atmosphere. Loved car free campsite, cars were only parked the other side of the hedge but camping field itself was free of vehicles. Great nature onsite from chickens to Tawny owls. All key facilities from toilets to freezer for ice packs were well kept and clean. Friendly host with great local knowledge.

Local attractions

As you’re settled on the Arlington estate, you’ll want to explore your domain a little – as well as a lengthy network of footpaths and adventure play trails, there’s also a splendid stately home that houses the National Trust Carriage Museum. If that’s fired you up for more walks, Heddon Valley (20 minutes’ drive) is popular for its sea views, and there are routes galore around the Exmoor National Park (15 minutes). Horse riding, kayaking, coasteering and heaps more antics can be had around the park too. Away from Exmoor, the traffic-free Tarka Trail, running from Barnstaple, is a good bet for a bike ride, or you could take your rods for a day of fishing at Wistland Pound Reservoir or Bratton Water (both about five minutes away by car). Surfers or surf wannabes can hit the beaches and surf schools of Saunton Sands and Woolacombe with a drive of half an hour or so. After watching animal antics on the farm, take a look at the more exotic creatures over at Exmoor Zoo, 10 minutes away and home to all sorts of beasties from around the globe.
