  • Cornish estate set around a 17th-century mansion
  • Heated pool (in July/August), library, writing room and regular events
  • A 36-acre woodland and garden setting, with spotless amenities
Verily, you’ll very much like Trewan Hall Camping Site, between Padstow and Newquay in mid-Cornwall. This lovely little place has been developed on an old Cornish estate around the 17th-century mansion of Trewan Hall, and carefully maintained with traditional building techniques to blend in with its 36-acre woodland and garden surroundings. And speaking of gardens, they’re lush – have a look at the site pics… The Hill family has added all sorts of little touches to make this a nice family site. There is a 25-metre outdoor swimming pool (only open in July and August) open from 10am to 6pm (with reduced hours in the first half of July). Evening entertainment is also on throughout July. Available at all times are a large field for ball games in front of the Hall, barns for table tennis, a barn with pool table set aside for teenagers and adults, and a library and writing room. A fully-stocked shop is open nearly 14 hours a day in high season (and shorter hours in low season). Trewan Hall also has a woodland playground. There are two different areas to pick a pitch from: one aimed at families near the play park, shop and barns, and the other more secluded in a bigger field – in both, you can pitch up where you like to have plenty of room, with the owners managing bookings so that there are always more pitches than people and what’s on offer never feels overcrowded.

Liked: The venue was absolutely lovely. We saw a lovely man when we first drove in who pointed us in the right direction and checked us in. I would love to come back again but hopefully when the weather is better. Thank you

Disliked: Not much to not like, the facilities were very slightly untidy definitely not dirty but I am clutching at straws

Primitive grass campsite

Liked: Travelled with children aged 6 - 14 as well as extended family. Pros - camping field was lovely with lots of wildlife (saw mole, bats, frogs and heard owls). Clean toilet/shower blocks, play area, ping pong tables (had to buy paddles/balls but these weren't expensive), a library with games, beautiful flower borders, and an outside heated pool which the kids loved. You can buy a nature trail for £3 that we also enjoyed. Evening entertainment was good and we ate at the BBQ which was really good. Cons - there were no water stands around the field, hire of a fire pit was only £5, but the logs were £12 for a small bag, and off-season was Sep where the pool is closed, and so for our last day and morning the kids couldn't swim. Overall, a great kid-friendly camp site.

Liked: The site has everything you could possibly need, great for family groups with lots to entertain all ages. Lovely clean facilities. Great starting point to visit lots of tourist points, Padstow, Watergate Bay, Newquay etc etc. Lovely little village, St Colum, walking distance away, recommend the pub, Ring o Bells and the chip shop too! All together a fabulous find and quite reasonable.

Disliked: Pool needed cleaning more often or instalation of some sort of foot bath to try to cut down on debris in pool.

Liked: Great location to easy access most of beautiful Cornwall within an hour of everything Cornwall has to offer. Our electric pitch was against the trees, which I choose to offer protection against wind and rain, although the ground was very soft and we had a lot of rain, and were totally in the shade so the grass never dried out and was a lutyle long. If I was to come back I'd probably pick a different location. A lovely campsite in general. Has good amenities, the heated pool was the draw for us as we knew they'd be other kids for ours to play with. The fresh bread, croissants etc in the morning were amazing, you have to get down before 9am and get them while they're warm (not sure if it all year round). The shop was well stocked with food, kids toys and lots of camping extras. The website says during July/August they're is entertainment in the barn, we only saw the vrass band play the week we were there nothing else seemed to be on. The wide open spaces for the kids to play and the woods were lovely.

Disliked: The turning in and out of site entrances, very precarious. Lots of cars and farm vehicles drive at speed down the one track lane and visibility turning out is quite hair raising. Mirrors would be a great addition and maybe some more visible signage as the small.wooden plaque is easily missed. The communal block was very good, however, it gets dirty really quickly with grass and mud. We stayed a week and the best time to shower was between 3-4pm after the morning and evening rush and whilst it's still fresh from cleaning - this is more about people not cleaning up after themselves and using the floor squidgy provided and leaving tissue on the floor.

Local attractions

Trewan Hall is near the centre of Cornwall with easy access to the north coast beaches and within easy driving distance of most of Cornwall’s attractions. For a short stroll, head into the old market town of St Columb Major a mile away, where there’s a 15th-century church, surf store, antique shop and fish and chip shops galore. Sand fans will be in heaven in this part of Cornwall: the closest beach to Trewan Hall is Mawgan Porth, four miles away; gorgeous Watergate Bay is 10 minutes’ drive away, or head to the Seven Bays clustered around the village of St Merryn, a few miles from Padstow and within 15 to 20 minutes’ drive of the site. Two top Cornwall spots within 10 miles are Newquay, where you should wriggle into your wetsuit for some of the best surfing in the country (surf schools are all over town and nearby for the uninitiated), and Padstow for the Camel Trail and Camel Estuary Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Zipwires, biodomes and more can be had at the Eden Project 15 miles away.
