  • Wildlife hide and pond to spy butterflies, badgers, foxes and falcons
Still trying to persuade a reluctant lesser half to take cover under canvas? If ditching them really isn’t an option, pack them into the car and take them to Treveague Campsite near Cornwall’s St Austell. The tagline at Treveague is ‘traditional camping as it should be’, but you can reassure your beloved that this will not mean shivering under a trickling cold tap, being in the middle of nowhere or only having substandard food: the facilities here are first rate, sea views are every which way and three beaches are within walking distance. Fancy some first-rate food too? Sneak along to the alfresco Secret Garden café, which serves up tasty organic and locally sourced treats a tad beyond the traditional camping menu: slow-cooked shoulder of lamb in red wine for the grownups and not a chicken nugget in sight for the juniors... Treveague has a heated and swish shower and toilet block with separate disabled facilities, an additional ladies’ dressing room with power sockets, mirrors and baby changing area, a drying room for boots and coats and a campers’ kitchen with microwave, fridge and power sockets. (Freeze your ice packs for free at reception.) Also on site is a wildlife hide where curious Georges can spy butterflies and dragonflies by day and badgers and foxes by night, and a natural spring-fed pond to attract buzzards, peregrine falcons and hummingbird hawk moths. Kids can put in a few hours at the wooden play fort too – one can practically hear the parental wine corks popping already.

Local attractions

Treveague is on the spectacular Roseland peninsula with beaches, child-safe bathing and hidden coves all around, as well as a good handful of historical houses, green gardens and quick access to the Eden Project, about 10 miles away. Go in one direction from Treveague Campsite to reach the family-friendly beach at Gorran Haven and the fish and chip shop, restaurant and pub at the village, and in the other for the rockpools of more secluded Hemmick beach and the long peaceful stretch and good fishing of the beach at Vault (the far end of Vault is naturist). As it’s the south coast, waters here are generally calm and not used for surfing, but sailing, fishing boat hire and kayaking is available from Mevagissey. Further along the coastline, make time for another National Trust site, the tidal island of St Michael’s Mount just off the coast at Mount's Bay and one of 43 of the county’s islands that can be walked to from the mainland at low tide: impress people with that factoid back home while you show them the pics.
