  • Small, friendly and family-run site on a five-acre smallholding
  • Within 10 minutes' drive of Perranporth's surfing beaches
  • Half an hour's drive from Bodmin Moor and Paradise Park zoo
Fond of fishing? Sometimes like a drop of cider? You’ll love it at Lakewell Touring and Camping Site, where there’s a fishing lake in the grounds for guests’ exclusive use and a cider farm with tours and tastings five minutes’ drive down the road. If apple-based tipples and angling aren't top of your agenda, it's handy that this peaceful family-run site on a smallholding is conveniently close to surf beaches and cycle trails, coastal paths and moorland meanderings. It’s also less than five minutes’ drive from the village of Goonhavern, where there’s a pub and a shop, and, for those touring the area by public transport, bus links to popular seaside and surfing spots like Perranporth and Newquay. Whether you’ve spent your days riding the waters, contemplating them, or doing something completely different, you’ll probably return ravenous, and if the pub and its menu seem too far to stray, you can pick up supplies in Perranporth or Newquay and have a barbecue back at base. Save a sausage for the dog, of course… canine pals are welcome on site too. With the waves of Perranporth a 10-minute drive away, the site’s popular with surfers, and proprietors Peter and Jane have installed an outdoor tap for the sluicing off of wetsuits and other gear.

Liked: This site was so beautifully maintained. The showers and toilet block were immaculate. We arrived later than planned to check in and phoned ahead to explain, the lady we spoke to was amazing and explained that they lived on site so not to worry at all about arriving later than the check in time. When we set up we wanted to go to the local for food and arrived just before 9pm to be told we were too late to order food. Haggis the owner of the campsite was there and spoke to staff who offered us food given the circumstances. This was over and above what could have been expected and so very greatly appreciated.

Liked: Everything. This is an old school campsite. The facilities were very well looked after and always clean and tidy. The owners were lovely and were happy to help if needed. The site is ideally located for visiting the whole of cornwall. Its only 10 mins drive from Perranporth or 15 mins to Newquay. The pitches were large and again very well maintained.

Disliked: Having to go home 😔

Liked: We stayed in our trailer tent with our friends and their children who were camping on the adjacent pitch. The site met all of our needs and is meticulously maintained. The children loved the lake and fishing, lots of fish were caught (and released). There was also a lot of green space in front of our pitches for some great cricket games. The toilet and shower block was always spotless and had a washing machine, tumble dryer and hair dryer. I particularly liked the layout of the shower cubicle's and the fact there was somewhere to put your toiletries whilst showering. If there one slight improvement that could be made, it would be that the water stayed on a little longer after each press of them shower button but that’s nit picking. There was very little WiFi or internet signal on our pitches but all the adults agreed that was probably the best bit of our trip, as it meant we weren’t distracted by our phones and I’m sure much more fun was had as a consequence. Location wise the site was very easy to find and meant we had easy access to everything in the area. The hosts were friendly and checked in most days. All in all a great mini break and we would definitely stay again.

Local attractions

The beaches of Perranporth and Newquay (15 minutes) are a haven for surfers of all levels, and have schools offering tuition in wave riding... but there are plenty of other ways to travel about this part of Cornwall too. There’s horse trekking and beach galloping on the menu in Perranporth and bikes to hire in Cambrose (15 minutes) for a coast-to-coast trail along the old miners’ route to Cornwall’s southern shores. Perranporth’s also the place to pick up the South West Coast Path for sea views and wildlife walks at height, and it’s half an hour to Bodmin if you want to see some of the county’s inland landscapes. On the edge of the ancient heaths, the Golitha Falls Nature Reserve has bluebell woods lining a long gorge that gives way eventually to a series of crashing cascades. It’s a similar distance to Bolventor for jaunts around the real Jamaica Inn and the resting place, so ‘tis said, of Excalibur at Dozmary Pool. For close-up encounters with wildlife, pack your earplugs and stop off at the Screech Owl Sanctuary (20 minutes), or hang with the red pandas, Asian short-clawed otters and an ark-load of avian life at Paradise Park (30 minutes). Soothe any ruffled feathers with a flit round Healy’s Cornish Cyder Farm, five minutes away, and once refreshed, take a quick chuff on the restored steam trains of the Lappa Valley Railway (15 minutes).
