  • Quiet Cornish farm site with spectacular sea views
  • A mile from Mawnan Smith; 15 minutes' drive from Falmouth
  • Play area; footpath to the beach, 1.5 miles away
'The best of Cornwall at your fingertips' is how the Penwarne Campsite team describe their patch. A description that you'd be hard-pressed to quibble with given its stunning sea views, easy access to Falmouth and area of outstanding natural beauty location. Penwarne Campsite makes a credible claim to being one of the oldest in all of Cornwall, having welcomed guests here since the 1920s. The site grounds have been worked by the Mann family since 1886, so your hosts are long-standing locals with lots of insider tips about the surrounding area. Although the farm is located inland, Maenporth beach is a mile and a half away and can be directly accessed via a well-maintained footpath. Walks in local woodlands are also within easy reach, and when it's time for a pint you're also just a mile from Mawnan Smith's village pub. On-site facilities are another of Penwarne Campsite's strong points: guests have a play area, toilet block and shower. Well-behaved dogs are allowed here too, and you're more than welcome to set up a barbecue and campfire (as long as a few simple safety rules are followed, of course).

Powered grass campsite

Liked: Great views of the sea, the pitch was nearly level so no need for levelling chocks. Good walk to meanporth beach (about 25-30 mins). Toilets have been improved over the years but are lacking compared to alot of other sites in the area. It's a working farm so you have to expect it. But it would be nicer if these where overhauled and made more enclosed with less bugs and wildlife living inside.

Disliked: Mens toilets Womens toilets

Primitive grass campsite

Liked: Nice view of sea.

Disliked: Absolutely disgusted by their service. Me and my family have been all over the UK, staying in cottages and caravans. First time camping and never again because of the owners. We had difficulties setting our tent up- without introducing who they are without a welcome- we were approached with ‘this is ridiculous’. After trying to explain why we took so long trying to set up the tent we were told to ‘Shut up’ CONSTANTLY!!! The woman (who I assume was the owner seeing as she didnt even introduce herself or even give us her name) even assaulted my mum by raising her fingers and pushing it against my mum’s chest. Could not sleep the whole night from fear that the woman would approach us again. We had children under 16 with us so it was a horrific and daunting experience. Do NOT go here if you are trying to have a friendly and welcoming place to stay.

Local attractions

It's a pretty place, is Penwarne. Located in a coastal area of outstanding natural beauty, this site has plenty of choice for excursions around and about. Sticking locally, you might like to sail by ferry over the Helford (five minutes' drive) for trips to secluded spots like Bosahan Cove, or to stay on the north bank of the river to survey the seasonal blooms at Trebah Garden (also five minutes). Green-fingered guests have lots more foliage to take in around this part of the coast – there's Glendurgan Garden (five minutes) next to the South West Coast Path and the jungle-like oasis at Penjerrick (five minutes), both of which can be comfortably reached on foot from base if you fancy a stretch of the legs. Of course, peaceful days homing in on all that horticulture might not be the best of bets if you've got kids to entertain. Handily, this part of Cornwall is also full of family-friendly attractions like Flambards Theme Park (25 minutes) and the Lappa Valley's steam railway (45 minutes), which can be easily interspersed with the calm and quiet of Kynance Cove (40 minutes) or ice creams on Falmouth seafront (15 minutes).
