If a lakeside stay within 25 minutes' drive of the surfing beaches of Bude and Widemouth Bay sounds like something you could get behind, take a good, long look at Tamar Lakes Campsite in Cornwall. Pitches face out over the larger of the two on-site lakes, Upper Tamar Lake. Anglers will no doubt have some fishy tales to tell after a day out netting some of the bream, roach, rudd and huge carp stashed in the two lakes… Make the most of the views using foot, cycle, wind or paddle power, or wander around the large pathway circling Upper Tamar Lake, designed for wheelchair and pushchair use and suitable for walking and cycling. The trails continue into the woods and countryside beyond for those who are feeling energetic, or there are easier walks and good picnic spots to be found around Lower Tamar Lake, which is a haven for wild birds (both lakes have a hide). Get stuck into watersports right on site: pedalos, Canadian canoes, dinghies, windsurfers and kayaks are available to hire for a small fee, although you're also welcome to bring your own boats and equipment too. Tamar Lakes Campsite has communal showers, a washing-up area, a chemical disposal point and recycling facilities. On the leisure front, there's also a playground, a tearoom selling souvenirs, and a café serving up light meals, cream teas and some rather moreish Cornish ice cream.

Liked It was scenic and peaceful.

Disliked It would be great if there was a discount available for solo travellers. I arrived by myself with my tiny tent attached to my trusty bicycle and I seem to have paid the same amount as a couple who turn up with a dog, a large tent, awning and separate gazebo.

Liked Location.

Disliked We weren’t given any codes to unlock the shower cubicles, which we were told would be sent to us.
There is no one to call and no one on site for help with anything like this.
Tried different phone numbers, and nothing.

We had lunch in the cafe which was yummy. The staff were really nice.

Pleasant walks around the lakes

Disliked General feeling of neglect. Brambles growing over the black water drainage point ( probably because it’s hidden with no signs) grass not cut.
Toilets & shower blocks, although very clean, were worse than the school ones I had in the 60s
At £25 quite expensive given the basic facilities and distance from anywhere other than the lakes.
Final point, the code on the shower blocks needs changing more often as it seems most visitors to the car park had the code including many of the park run runners on the Saturday
Ladies shower block lock so stiff my wife couldn’t use it.

Local attractions

Attractive Bude (20 minutes' drive) has lots to see, and is surrounded by old villages such as Poughill (15 minutes) and Kilkhampton (10 minutes). Take a dip in the scenic Bude Sea Swimming Pool (20 minutes) or perhaps try out a surfing lesson on Summerleaze Beach (20 minutes). North of this area is the Hartland peninsula, home to the car-free cobbled streets of Clovelly (half an hour). To the south, a tour of Tintagel Castle (50 minutes), followed by a visit to the pretty fishing village of Boscastle (40 minutes) and The Museum of Witchcraft and Magic, is a top option for a day out. Or make the short trip inland to Launceston (40 minutes) for a journey on the steam railway. Keen to see some more scenic Cornwall beaches while taking your holiday? You may want to head south towards Crackington Haven (half an hour) or tick off closer spots like Sandymouth Bay Beach (15 minutes) and Welcombe Mouth Beach (25 minutes).
