  • Wild camping with spectacular views on the Saint’s Way in Cornwall
  • A 10-minute drive to the Eden Project and 30 minutes to the coast
  • Back-to-basics site with hot showers; barbecues allowed
Everybody and their dogs are welcome at The Camping Field, a sheltered hillside spot with views across to Helman Tor and its prehistoric fort. Located in the Cornwall Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, this site is all about peaceful seclusion – but with the added bonus of being a 10-minute drive from the A30. Whether you’re just passing through on your way to Land’s End or hanging around for a while, chances are you won’t be lost for something to do here. For starters, there are hiking opportunities aplenty: choose between the Saint’s Way (accessed directly from the site), Bodmin Moor (15 minutes’ drive) and the South West Coast Path (25 minutes). If you want to add a bit of culture to the mix, Georgian-era Pencarrow House and Garden (20 minutes) has a good line in antiques, as well as walks in landscaped parkland. The sea is a must in Cornwall, of course, so it's handy that the site is just a 30-minute drive from south coast beaches like sandy Porthpean and dog-friendly Spit Beach, and the kids can burn off energy on the rides at Springfield Fun Park (20 minutes). Most people, however, will probably put the famous Eden Project (10 minutes) at the top of their to-do list, and spend a day pottering around tropical greenhouses dotted with madcap sculptures. Limited facilities to give guests something of a wild-camping experience include toilets, hot showers, water taps, a washing-up area and a grey-water waste unit. Barbecues are permitted on site, and you can pick up any bits and bobs in St Austell (20 minutes).

Powered grass campsite

Liked: We love coming here. It is so quiet and peaceful and back to basics. Loads of space for the dogs to run around. Land owner is very attentive often driving around making sure all is well and is happy to have a chat and go out of his way to make you feel at home. Great location, on the Saints Way. Showers are lovely but basic. Portaloos were clean and well kept. This is the perfect camp site for going back to basics. If you don’t like porta loos then don’t come expecting luxury toilets.

Disliked: Not a dislike but you could perhaps sell local eggs? Can’t beat fresh eggs in the morning.

Powered grass campsite

Liked: The owner was amazing. As we we⁶re pitching up, he came round to check we were all alright and had a very friendly chat. Plenty of portaloos around. Shows were lovely and hot. There was a lot of freedom of how you wanted to pitch. Exactly what you want if you're traveling down the south-west peninsula.

Primitive grass campsite

Liked: Back to basics not far from home just what we wanted. Large field loads of space, relaxed and laid back. Owner is friendly and helpful, not loads of rules and regs. Normally go for adult only sites especially in August, but we couldn’t hear the kids, who were loving the open space. Lovely woodland walk to Luxulyan. Will def be back to meet friends there.

Disliked: Nothing to dislike

Powered grass campsite

Liked: The owner was very nice and knowledgeable of the area

Disliked: The owner met us and introduced himself as we arrived and is a very pleasant man. He drives around 2-3 times a day but hardly checks the toilets. We booked for 7 nights but left after 2 nights. The facilities are disgusting and unclean, you have to turn the tap on In the sink in a different shed to get the showers to work which means getting dressed and walking out the shower block. Other holiday makers are rude and think every square inch of the field belongs to them, we had children walking into our tent and their parents just sat there and never moved them or told them it’s not allowed, also parents letting their children playing in and around the porta toilets seemed and exceptional thing for some parents. The couple next to us had an argument every night that lasted until 3 in the morning and the owner refused to ask them to stop and keep the noise down, There was lots of drinking and smoking of cannabis going on all day and night! The final straw for us to leave was the porta toilets being so unclean and unusable to the extent one of them had human waste all over the walls and doors. We have camped at multiple locations throughout the uk over the years and this is the worst by a long way. If you want a budget holiday without the need of using the facilities then this is the place to book.

From the manager: Sorry that your stay was disappointing. As the campsite owner I pride myself on keeping the campsite toilets and other areas clean and check this regularly. Some of the points you have raised I have no control of and you didn't raise any of these points with me during your stay. I thank you for your feedback and hope you enjoyed your stay aside from the issues you have raised. Richard Happy Camping 🏕

Powered grass campsite

Liked: Hassle free camping in an idyllic location. We didn’t use the showers but nice washing up area with plenty of hot water. Toilet facilities are port-a-loos but very clean and well stocked with even a can of air freshener. Other reviews questioned phone signal but we didn’t have a problem

Disliked: Nothing to dislike. Be aware the roads in are very narrow!

Local attractions

Screech Owl Sanctuary (20 minutes’ drive) is home to more than just owls, though these are really rather lovely to handle and admire in the regular flying displays. Other residents include emus, alpacas and wallabies, which you can meet, pet and feed (advance booking is recommended). Also on site are a playground and a café serving delicious homemade cakes. If you're travelling with young children, they might like the rides at Camel Creek Family Theme Park (30 minutes), which include a floral take on spinning teacups, a gentle drop tower and a water-fight ground with fillable balloons, plus soft-play areas. At the restored Lost Gardens of Heligan (40 minutes), you can stroll through themed areas such as the Productive Gardens, growing a bounty of fruit and veg; the Pleasure Grounds, dotted with statuary and fountains; and the Jungle, a lush area of tropical palm trees, banana plantations and bamboo tunnels.
