  • Secluded pop-up site on a working deer farm
  • A 10-minute walk from Maplehurst; 35 minutes' drive from Worthing
  • Firepits and firewood available; 10 minutes' walk to the nearest pub
Sign up for stays at this working farm in West Sussex if you fancy spending your hols surrounded by a prancing herd of deer. Maplehurst Farm (indeed, a working deer farm) is just outside the small village of Maplehurst and its pub and a 15-minute drive from Horsham, where there's shopping, bars and restaurants galore. Those travelling without a car can easily bike down to the site from Horsham station in about half an hour. Whether arriving here on two wheels or four, you're pretty sure to benefit from bringing a bike along – the surrounding area has a host of cycle trails to explore. This pop-up site is all about spreading relaxed and natural vibes – and might you like easy access to the coast with that? Days admiring the Sussex seascape can be speedily sorted here, as Maplehurst Farm is just over half an hour's drive from the sand and surf of Worthing and Brighton. There's much to be said for spending time around the farm, too – guest numbers are kept low, so you and your gang will have ample space to run around in. Firepits, picnic benches and bundles of firewood can all be sorted by arrangement (just get in touch 48 hours before). Each unit has its own portable loo; shower facilities are shared. Bambi-loving bambini are welcome at this family-friendly spot.

Local attractions

Cavorting through the gorgeous local countryside will be high on the list of most coming here. Maplehurst Farm is a few minutes' walk or cycle from the Downs Link, a splendid long-distance and largely car-free route that follows a disused railway line from Surrey all the way down to the Sussex coast. Newbies should head to West Grinstead (10 minutes' drive) to get their bearings at the trail’s community-run visitor centre. Kid-centric jaunts aren't in short supply around here either – between beach trips to Brighton and Worthing (both 35 minutes), treetop climbs at Go Ape Crawley (25 minutes) and the rides and slides at Fisher's Farm Park (20 minutes), you can be pretty sure that there'll be something to amuse your brood. Deer will likely be just one of the animals you spot in these rural surrounds, especially if you head out to Pulborough Brooks Nature Reserve (25 minutes), a place renowned for its birdlife. Guaranteed close-up encounters with feathered flyers can also be sorted at Huxley's Birds of Prey (15 minutes). When around Horsham, make sure to stop off and say hi to the cows at Chesworth Farm (15 minutes from site).
