  • Working farm site in a valley on the South Downs Way
  • In the South Downs National Park, a 20-minute drive from Chichester
  • CafĂ© at the entrance to the farm; campfires allowed on site
Soak up the valley views and get in some real quality time at Littleton Farm Campsite, a rural working farm site in the South Downs National Park. Based in a spacious valley that's home to fallow deer, roe deer and hares, this wildlife haven is 100 metres from the South Downs Way cycle path, making it a well-placed base for discovering the chalk downlands and sloping valleys around the national park. Treat your tummy to some TLC at the on-site cafĂ© at the farm’s entrance – it serves up barista coffee and a nice selection of cakes and pastries for a tasty breakfast or to top up your energy reserves throughout the day. And if you want to fill your pockets with snacks to eat throughout the day, there's a village shop 10 minutes’ drive away. Building up an appetite for all this should be straightforward, as you can head out for hikes and mountain bike rides straight from the site. Plus, the site is family-friendly so the kids can tag along on the nearby countryside trails too. Facilities back at base include portable toilets, hot showers and a washing-up area. You may want to end the day with a campfire and stargazing on the site (which is located in a designated dark skies reserve), or you may want to head out instead to a local pub for a chilled drink. For the former, you can buy logs, kindling and firelighters on site; for the latter there’s a 16th-century pub-restaurant five minutes’ drive away – another place to relax and tattle about the day’s tales.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked: Beautiful field, with several loos (clean) and water taps. Shower further away near car park and farm buildings. Cadence cafe a lovely bonus - served great coffee. Spent one day walking the South Downs Way to another Cadence cafe and back again, beautiful countryside, easy routes to follow, stunning views. A great selection of good pubs within 4 miles or so.

Disliked: Nothing.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked: Large camp site with plenty of toilet facilities and washing up stations. Campsite management we’re very friendly and on hand to help with anything. Perfect location to start walking along South Downs Way and visiting the nearby towns of Petworth and village of Graffham.

Disliked: Camping on a weekend during the summer months meant other campers were up late at night into the early hours of the morning chit chatting and drinking but nothing too bad.

Local attractions

Before you get to the active stuff, perhaps a drink? Tinwood Estate (10 minutes' drive) runs vineyard tours for those of you who want to tell apart your rosĂ© from your red. It’s not hard to track down a cutesy coffee spot in Chichester (20 minutes) – after you’ve visited the cathedral and shops, of course. Now that you’re properly fed and fuelled, you might want to practise your putting skills on the golf course at Cowdray House (20 minutes). It’s a fabulous setting for polo too, based on a country estate with heritage ruins. Where else is historic around here? Petworth (10 minutes), a market town with antique shops, hits the mark. The Goodwood Estate (15 minutes), too – this estate hosts horseracing events, golf and a flying school. Chichester Harbour Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (half an hour) is another great spot – from here, boat trips depart to search for seals. Rather explore realistic buildings from between 950AD and the 19th century? Head to the Weald & Downland Living Museum (10 minutes' drive). West Dean Gardens (15 minutes) also has an Edwardian pergola, walks and garden courses.
