  • Spacious South Downs pitches with vineyard views and handy amenities
  • Five minutes' drive to Bluebell Railway; 10 minutes to Ashdown Forest
  • Part of a wine estate with tours and tastings available to book
Partial to a glass of wine? Keen on a pretty rural view? How about a glass of wine with rural views thrown in too – perhaps while a firepit crackles away to keep you warm too? That rather lovely experience is on offer at Downs View Campsite, part of a wine estate in the West Sussex countryside about 10 minutes’ drive from Haywards Heath. Pitches here look out over rows of vines, with the hills of the South Downs National Park as a backdrop. Each pitch has plenty of space from which to soak up the views, and you’re welcome to bring along a firepit (or hire one on site) or barbecue, as long as it’s raised off the ground. Gentle acoustic music is permitted too, but you’ll need to be mindful of neighbours and keep it quiet after 10pm. All the essentials are provided here: guests have access to hot showers, flushing toilets, washing-up areas and plenty of parking. A mobile pizza van stops by on Saturday nights too, so you can buy fresh wood-fired pizzas for easy dinners on your pitch. And that glass of wine? The main winery is about 20 minutes away on foot, via a trail that runs through the vines and woodland. Once you get there, you can sample a complimentary glass, pick up a bottle for your fireside evening or get the full experience by signing up for a tour and/or tasting session (these are rightly popular so you’ll need to book ahead). Kids, dogs and non-drinkers needn’t feel left out either, as there are three self-guided trails to follow through the grounds, taking in vine views, woodlands and nature ponds along the way.

Local attractions

Once you’ve taken a stroll around the site’s grounds, set your sights on some of the area’s other great walking areas. There are plenty of places for walks long and short in the surrounding South Downs National Park – one of the most popular being Ashdown Forest (10 minutes’ drive), where you can see the landscapes that inspired the Winnie the Pooh books, and even play a game at Pooh Sticks Bridge. For other South Downs views, head to the National Trust’s Sheffield Park to explore the gorgeous gardens and play trail, or rest your legs with a ride on the Bluebell Railway (both five minutes away by car). Other days out? Try the crazy golf, play barn and ice cream parlour at Heaven Farm (five minutes), take your fishing kit to Latchetts Lakes (five minutes) or book a top-notch cultural fix with an opera or concert at Glyndebourne (25 minutes).
