Level grass pitch in the orchard
Grass pitch - the russets
Whole site surrounded by trees
Large pitches

  • Orchard pitches on a fruit farm and plant nursery in Kent countryside
  • A 10-minute drive to Sissinghurst Castle Garden and 25 to Leeds Castle
  • Fresh eggs on site; five minutes’ drive to a pub
It’s not every day you get to pitch up among fruit trees, so grab the chance to do just that at Frittenden Orchard, where off-grid grass pitches are scattered in orchards on a Kent farm near Staplehurst. For even more of a back-to-nature vibe, you can wander the 11-acre woodland wildlife haven around the camping fields, where you might get to see foxes, badgers and deer. Kick start the day at morning tai chi classes (beginners are more than welcome, so no-one has an excuse for not turning up), and the site owners are happy to suggest local walks and sightseeing ideas for you. Free-range eggs are available from their own hens (just think of the breakfast fry-ups…), and you might also like to wolf down some freshly picked strawberries from the farm’s fruit fields (in season). As this is a simple campsite, there’s no electricity but you will have a wifi connection and ice-pack freezing to keep your food fresh and chilled, as well as charging facilities for your devices, so you can keep in touch with the outside world. You can barbecue meals on grills brought from home, and pick up locally sourced produce from the handy store in Frittenden (five minutes’ drive), but if you’d rather someone else did your cooking while you’re away from home, there’s also a smashing pub in the village serving yummy burgers and local beers.

Primitive grass travel trailer campsite

Liked Tranquil peace and quiet in beautiful green surroundings. Good basic facilities, no fuss to get in the way of relaxing with a glass of wine.

Disliked The weather was not so kind on our visit meaning any grass area was very soft underfoot. Walking boots would be ideal if expecting lots of rain. But the owners however foresaw this and understandably put us on hard standing which was perfect.

Primitive grass travel trailer campsite

Liked We arrived on a very dark wet night in November. The host kindly spent time giving details of where to find things.
We parked up, were the only ones there and were allowed to park on the gravel as it was so wet.
Had a very peaceful night.
In the morning we could see the orchard and camping field. The orchard must be really pretty in spring.

Primitive grass travel trailer campsite

Liked Great location in the middle rural Kent. Pitch up close to rows of apple trees and a wide open camping field bordered with a mature tree wind screen.

Disliked Not a dislike. But looking forward to showers for 2026

Local attractions

Kent is known for its historic stately homes – but which to visit first? Leeds Castle (25 minutes’ drive) has a host of activities, from guided tours to jousting tournaments and raptor displays, to keep families entertained all day. There are rose gardens to wander in Sissinghurst Castle Garden (10 minutes), and at moated Scotney Castle (25 minutes) you can follow trails through landscaped parkland. There’s more active stuff to do too; kids with energy to burn can wear themselves out on zipwires or mountain-biking trails at Bedgebury National Pinetum and Forest (20 minutes), or on the inflatable course at Bewl Water Aqua Park (25 minutes). Younger children can cuddle the cute creatures at Buttercups Sanctuary For Goats (20 minutes), and any rainy-day issues are taken care of by the indoor pool at The Weald Sports Centre (10 minutes). If you’ve treated the kids to their day out, you deserve some me-time too. How about heading into Royal Tunbridge Wells (40 minutes) to browse indie shops or lunch in the cosy bistros of The Pantiles? And if you fancy a night out, book tickets for shows at the Trinity or Assembly Hall theatres.
