  • Peaceful adults-only touring park in a woodland in rural Kent
  • A short drive away from the Kent Downs National Landscape
  • Food pub five minutes’ walk away; good area for walking and cycling
Surrounded by mature trees, the adults-only grass pitches at Gate House Wood Country Park are somewhat unusual – for they were created on the relics of an old quarry. Found 20 minutes’ drive from Sevenoaks, this peaceful family-friendly site puts you right in the middle of the Garden of England, within easy reach of the Kent Downs National Landscape, Royal Tunbridge Wells and the Kent coast. The park is just off the A20 at the bottom of Wrotham Hill, so it’s also a handy stopover if you’re London or Dover bound – in fact the train to London leaves from the village of Borough Green (10 minutes’ drive) if you fancy a day sightseeing in the big city. Hikers (and any accompanying dogs) will also be pleased to know that Gate House Wood is only a few minutes’ walk from both the Weald Way and the Pilgrims Way. On-park facilities include spotless shower blocks with heated showers, hand dryers and shaving points, plus a separate accessible facility and a fully equipped laundry room. Friendly staff members are on hand with information on the local area. Barbecues are allowed (off the ground only please), but if you prefer not to cook there’s a foodie pub just five minutes’ walk away and several restaurants close by too. Borough Green has pretty much everything else you could need, from supermarkets and a chemist to hairdressers, cafés and a posh spa.

Liked: I stayed at this site for 3 nights. I had a very friendly welcome from Andy and Jenny. It was their first day on the job, and whilst I was on site, they worked tirelessly to improve the campsite. The reception was being decorated at the time. My hardstanding pitch was perfectly level. The site is surrounded by mature trees and has a very relaxed feel about it. The facilities block is a little tired but kept nice and cleen and the push button shower was lovely and hot. The wash up room had two nice big sinks with a washing machine and dryer in it. As the site is under new ownership, I expect improvements will be made to waterpoints and wastewater dumping which was a bit antequated. I would stay here again.

Disliked: Constant hum of traffic from the M20 and A20 which border the site.

Liked: The location was fab - just moments off the the M20/M26, however far enough away to not hear road noise. The hosts were amazing - from the moment I turned onto the property to leaving at the end of my stay, I was made to feel incredibly welcomed. I loved my pitch location. The showers were nice and warm. Everything was clean.

Disliked: The taps in the washroom stay on for a matter of seconds which made washing my hands a little difficult, but this is such a minimal issue and certainly not a deciding factor, especially as it’s easy enough to keep pushing the button down!

Primitive grass campsite

Liked: Very friendly welcome on arrival. Lots of local knowledge offered by the owners. Staff member Ian couldn't do enough to make sure we had a great stay. Lovely woodland location, peaceful. It was clean and tidy. Basic but sufficient facilities. Recently taken over so new facilities are being installed, like an on-site shop and cafe.
