  • Peaceful family-friendly touring park in a woodland in rural Kent
  • A short drive away from the Kent Downs National Landscape
  • Food pub five minutes’ walk away; good area for walking and cycling
Surrounded by mature trees, the family-friendly grass pitches at Gatehouse Wood Country Park are somewhat unusual – for they were created on the relics of an old quarry. Found 20 minutes’ drive from Sevenoaks, this peaceful site puts you right in the middle of the Garden of England, within easy reach of the Kent Downs National Landscape, Royal Tunbridge Wells and the Kent coast. The park is just off the A20 at the bottom of Wrotham Hill, so it’s also a handy stopover if you’re London or Dover bound – in fact the train to London leaves from the village of Borough Green (10 minutes’ drive) if you fancy a day sightseeing in the big city. Hikers (and any accompanying dogs) will also be pleased to know that Gatehouse Wood is only a few minutes’ walk from both the Weald Way and the Pilgrims Way. On-park facilities include spotless shower blocks with heated showers, hand dryers and shaving points, plus a separate accessible facility and a fully equipped laundry room. Friendly staff members are on hand with information on the local area. Barbecues are allowed (off the ground only please), but if you prefer not to cook there’s a foodie pub just five minutes’ walk away and several restaurants close by too. Borough Green has pretty much everything else you could need, from supermarkets and a chemist to hairdressers, cafés and a posh spa.

From the manager: Bryan, Thank you for taking the time to write your review. We are pleased you enjoyed your stay. The hardstanding areas are quite narrow, but wide enough to facilitate most caravans and motorhomes. We like to keep as much green/grassy areas as possible. Primitive grass campsite

Liked: Friendly check in. Proximity to footpath. Good size amenity block with toilets, washing up facilities.

Disliked: Play equipment not installed correctly so 4yo wasnt big enough to use it. Very sure some were smoking weed but noone around to resolve. Wasn't too busy but if it was, ot wpuld have felt very crammed in. Not enough privacy vegetation. Female toilets very unclean! Barrier came down on top of van whilst entering. Recommend you go through quickly! Shame no way of getting straight onto footpath.

From the manager: Thank you for your review. We ensure we clean our facilities to a high standard on a daily basis. We will do more regular checks on this in the future. Play equipment has all been installed correctly and refurbished. The slide ladder is quite high to prevent smaller children climbing unsupervised. The barrier will come down but only if the laser beam is broken which can sometimes happen if a pedestrian enters through the barrier before the vehicle. The signs direct all pedestrians to the left of the barriers. Finally if someone is found to be smoking weed it is most definitely not something we condone. We are very sorry you were unable to locate us whilst you were here to chat through your concerns and we will address the issues you have raised on the review.

Primitive grass campsite

Liked: Site was easy to find, the pitches were level and the wardens were helpful

Disliked: No mop or bucket in the shower area so had to wear flip flops as was muddy, most places we have stayed at have the option to clean after you for other people to use, should have option for wash basins with doors as wasn’t keen on washing with people walking in the toilet area, needs more showers as not enough to cope with high volume of campers children allowed to play with rubber footballs around the pitches had to say to the children to mind my camper. Last time I camped here was 10 years ago, had it updated its facilities no still out dated and yet charging premium prices

From the manager: Hi, thank you for taking the time to write a review. We do try to keep our facilities as clean as possible, we will always revisit during the day if it is bought to our attention that extra cleaning is required. We do have a private disabled and family room which you could have used if you felt uncomfortable in the communal area. We would always ask our guests to chat to us if you were having any issues and we would resolve them as best we can whilst you are with us. The site has recently changed ownership and aspects of the park are being refurbished at present. Hopefully should you visit us again in the future you will notice the changes.
