  • Chiddingstone and Penshurst Place within a 10-minute drive
  • On-site carp and roach fishing available; firewood for sale
Camping in Kent is a fine option indeed, whether you're after family-friendly breaks in the Garden of England, wine-tasting vineyard voyages or just a quiet rural break within easy reach of London. Hever Camping, a family-run site half a mile from the small village of Markbeech, makes an excellent base for all three – and with a good dose of history thrown in too… Managed by sisters Sarah and Gina, the farm where Hever Camping is based has been in the hands of the same family for over 100 years, meaning your hosts are very knowledgeable about the local area. Originally a dairy farm attached to the Hever Castle estate, the cows are now long gone – but the grand grounds of the castle and its gardens are easily accessed on foot in around 20 minutes. Hever Camping is split into two parts – Farm Field, with toilets, showers and a washing-up area (with hot water) and the more remote Pond Field, with toilets and cold water. The farm is home to a woodland, a pond, trees that are great for climbing and a Wendy house for the kids. On-site angling is available, with likely catches including carp and roach. Firewood is sold here too (subject to availability). Nearby off-site amenities include Markbeech's pub and farm shop (10 minutes' walk from the site gates) and Cowden railway station (20 minutes), where direct trains can take you to London Bridge in as little as 45 minutes.

Pond field primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked: Loved the peace & quiet in the pond field. Good site for nature lovers. Great showers in the farm field, good water pressure, nice and hot and clean. Toilet block in pond field is a bit dated but always clean and does the job. Free fire pit and cheap bag of wood. Overall this site is great value for money, I will definitely be visiting again.

Farm field primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked: The showers and toilet block all seemed to be in good working order, there was hot water and it was clean. It is a large, open field, with lots of space to be distant from other pitches or for children and dogs to run around.

Disliked: The field isn't especially flat: we pitched on a slight slope and thought we needed to because we arrived when everywhere was quite full up but when I looked more closely, only about 3-4 pitches were on really flat ground. In addition, the field is directly under the Gatwick airport flight path so we found the aircraft noise quite disruptive. Those things are not really in the site's control, but worth bearing in mind if you are looking for somewhere very peaceful. More problematic was that, when we arrived, we found out that there was a music festival happening at the site that night. I am pretty sure that this either wasn't the case or wasn't made clear when I booked our stay, and we were not subsequently notified of it. The music did stop at 11, as per the campsite rules about noise, but the noise up to then was still unexpected and unwelcome.

From the manager: Hi there, Thank you for staying with us. We pride ourselves with our bespoke shower block and are so pleased that you enjoyed the space in the field. I would like to clarify that there definitely was not a festival on during your stay, but one band put on for the campers enjoyment, with food and a bar for the evening. There was plenty of notice given and there were signs up on site. If your concerns were bought to our attention while you were here, we could've offered you the more remote field, where you wouldn't be able to hear the music. All the best

Good spacious site with clean facilities and friendly atmosphere.

Farm field primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked: Lovely location, great walks nearby. We stayed in the farm field which had good hot showers, plenty of space, some pitches have wooden pub table and fire pits. Toilet block was clean (but unisex which I don’t personally like but was fine.)

Disliked: Unisex toilets.

Farm field primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked: We arrived in the pouring rain and the staff could not have been more helpful to us. Unloading our car & x3 kids under 5 into their trucks and driving us down to our pitch as the road was too boggy to drive on. They were so helpful & friendly and the kids loved it. But the quality of the road surface right by the Pond field really does need some attention. The facilities are very basic, but we knew that when we booked. There are unisex loos (up steep steps), spiders, dark but there was always toilet paper and the toilets themselves were fairly clean. The field itself it lovely, the woodland play area is fantastic. The surrounding countryside is beautiful. We saw Heron, a kestrel and deer right by our field. We really liked having an open (off ground) fire for smores. The hosts are very friendly and helpful. We loved the relative wild and open space of the camp but (stupidly) we didn't quite realise we would be sleeping right under a flight path to Gatwick. This didn't bother us so much at night but it was a shame not to hear the sounds of the lovely nature around us with gigantic aircraft flying overhead every 2 minutes.

Disliked: Airplane noise

Farm field primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked: Location was great but the airplanes (which we knew already) Place was huge, with playground for kids Toilets were very clean Food and coffee were available. Even some music and bubble party (till 9pm) one night for the kids to have A BLAST! Near some nice forest walk which we enjoyed immensely

Disliked: Nothing! Airplanes and helicopters passing by often were a bit of a killer, but we knew in advance and that's the price to pay for not being very far from London!

Local attractions

First port of call around these parts simply has to be the excellent Hever Castle (20 minutes' walk or five minutes' drive): the childhood home of Anne Boleyn has plenty of attractions to keep you busy for a full day out, including a water maze, playgrounds and a fab series of summer events including things like jousting tournaments and open-air theatre shows. For a bit more on the local history front, head to Chartwell (15 minutes' drive), a long-term haunt of Winston Churchill, or to Penshurst Place (10 minutes), where you can tour the medieval manor or trot around the estate's 100 acres, taking in the lakes, adventure playground and woodland trails along the way. More of the past is on display in Chiddingstone (five minutes), a well-preserved Tudor village managed by the National Trust. Need something to keep the kids entertained? Edenbridge (10 minutes) has a well-maintained public leisure centre nearby if they've got excess energy to burn off, while trips to top local theme parks like Diggerland Kent (55 minutes) or zoos like the UK Owl and Raptor Centre (20 minutes) could also be in the offing.
