  • Family-focused campsite with stunning views over Port Lympne
  • Two miles from Dymchurch and its sandy beach; Hythe 10 minutes' drive
  • On-site shop; activities for kids and adults; dogs and campfires OK
Set in the pretty foothills of Port Lympne and just two miles from Dymchurch and its sandy beach, Fallow Fields Lathe Barn is a friendly site for families in the gorgeous Kent countryside. Spread over 10.5 acres of fields and woodlands, it has modern facilities including well-maintained toilets, hot showers and an on-site shop selling local produce to make sure your stay is as comfortable as possible. The site, which is run by the people behind the very popular Fallow Fields campsite nearby, is located in Burmarsh, about half a mile outside the village centre where there is a local pub for meals, snacks and drinks. There is also a bus stop in the village, with regular services running to both Ashford and Folkestone. Fallow Fields Lathe Barn is definitely a kid-pleaser, and not just because of its proximity to the beach – there's a range of on-site activities available for both young ones and grownups here, including family film evenings, bushcraft, welly wanging and yoga. Dogs are also welcome to come and stay, and campfires are allowed too. Please note that this is a family-focused place, not somewhere for late-night parties. To ensure an enjoyable stay for everyone, the Fallow Fields Lathe Barn team asks that quiet hours be respected between 10.30pm and 7.30am.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked: Loved the amount of activities on offer. My children did bushcraft session which they loved and gave us 90 mins peace. The soft play was great and it was handy having a small shop and bar. The place felt safe and the showers were actually hot which was great.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked: Loved how peaceful, spacious, clean and safe the area and the surrounding facilities were. We camped for the first time ever.

Disliked: Some adults and children didn't respect the 10.30pm quiet rule and were laughing or running around at midnight. Not good if you want to get a good sleep

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked: The site is a wonderful size, the playing fields and areas for children are great. The touches like family movie on a Saturday night, the pizzas and the cafe in the shop are brilliant. The facilities are to a lovely standard and the showers are powerful and hot (if a little too warm sometimes which is unheard of camping).

Disliked: We booked as a group via pitch-up and despite following instructions on here we weren’t next to those we were going with. We weren’t too far away and it worked ok, but apparently you can pay to book a specific pitch via their direct website, which meant no pitches next to each other were available, despite booking months in advance.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked: Lovely field and things for children such as soft play, swing ball, giant drafts and badminton. Plus bookable activities. A well stocked shop and some cooked food options. I was worried about not being able to park up next to pitch but you could drive up to unload and car park was really nearby so it wasn't a problem at all. Washing up station good. The views were lovely and near Port Lympne. Friendly helpful staff.

Disliked: Toilets and water tap in the field weren't operational so had to walk to the main block. Toilets and showers were OK but could have been a bit better maintained. It wouldn't put me off going but the children were scared to use them because of the spiders! Activities too expensive.

Local attractions

Plumes of steam are often visible from Fallow Fields Lathe Barn, as trains from the Romney, Hythe and Dymchurch Railway trundle their way along just a short distance away. If you fancy riding the rails, the nearest station is in Dymchurch (five minutes' drive), where there is also a sandy beach and visitor centre with plenty to see and do. Alternatively, you could head out on a safari at Port Lympne Reserve‍ (10 minutes), a popular breeding sanctuary that's home to rare and endangered animals such as tigers, rhinos, zebras, gorillas and bears. If extinct animals are more your (or your kids') jam, there's also a dinosaur forest where you can stomp through the trees in search of T-Rex and pterodactyls. Heading slightly further afield, you could explore the seaside towns of Folkestone (25 minutes), a treasure trove of vintage clothes, fab furniture finds and tasty street food. Alternatively, there's the old fishing village of Dungeness (25 minutes) with its vast shingle beach and the far-off shadow of its power station. Wherever you end up exploring, don't forget the pretty town of Hythe (10 minutes) with its well-preserved medieval and Georgian buildings.
