  • Rural pub campsite in the green Kent countryside
  • A quarter of an hour from Deal by car; Broadstairs 30 minutes
  • Food and drink served on site; easy access from the A256
Set down on the edge of a quiet Kentish village…on the outskirts of Tilmanstone, The Plough and Harrow has friendliness down to an art. And if that isn’t already a good start, this welcoming pub is close to the south coast, with seaside spots like Deal (15 minutes' drive) and Broadstairs (half an hour) within striking distance. One thing’s for sure, you can look forward to a laidback break here exploring Kent's seascapes – or relax in the knowledge that you have quick and easy access to the cross-Channel ferries at Dover. The main pub building dates back to the 1850s and with food and drink available in the pub, you shouldn't be troubled by any tummy grumbles. The pub is bordered by a quiet camping field with a range of quality holiday accommodation options. Pets are allowed in the main field, but not in hired accommodation. Plus, toilets and showers are available here, with more amenities available in the pub. The Plough and Harrow is just off the A256, so it won't take long to get yourself somewhere interesting along the Kent coast. While there aren't many more amenities in the village, there is a kids' playground, and nearby Sandwich (10 minutes' drive to the north) has a small but well-stocked supermarket, a handful of independent cafés and good public transport links, including a mainline railway station.

Liked: We had a super welcome from James and Melody. Shower and toilet facilities were spotless as was the pub itself. Although pitches are just back from the road it was extremely quiet at night so we had no trouble sleeping.

Disliked: Shower facilities could be modernised.

Liked: This is a good stop over for Channel crossings. Very convenient - Dover about 15 mins. It’s a pub with parking, so there is some road noise but we didn’t find it too bad. Staff were friendly and efficient and we had a decent meal at the pub. Facilities are in a portacabin but totally fine.

Liked: The owner is very helpful, i can come in earlier, thats very kind. The shower is powerful thats a bonus, with good hot water. The Glamping site is good, but no vacancy that time.

Disliked: The camping site is too crowded, its supposed to be parking lots, next to busy road all day and night. The grass pitch is on the slope, not an even path. With that many plot (think about 10 pitches) there are only 2 toilets and 2 showers, its inadequate.

Liked: After reading reviews, I wasn't sure what to expect from the pitches but we turned up and managed to get a hard standing pitch which was on a slight slant but nothing major. James greeted us and he was nothing but helpful, lovely fella who is on hand if you need any help. Overall we loved our stay, such a lovely place, perfect location for our stop over to catch our ferry to Dover in the morning. Shower/toilet facilities were clean with hand soap and toilet roll.

Liked: Piccolo campeggio vicinissimo a Dover - in meno di 20 minuti si raggiunge il porto per il ferry. Corrente in piazzola, tutti i servizi disponibili. Presente anche un piccolo blocco bagni con due docce e due bagni. In loco è presente anche un pub (non abbiamo potuto mangiarvi perchè abbiamo pernottato nel giorno di chiusura).

Local attractions

Get to know the local haunts… with a pretty promenade and pebbly beach, Deal (15 minutes’ drive) has independent shops, galleries and museums in no short stock. And while Sandwich (10 minutes) might be slightly smaller, medieval life is well-preserved here, with town tours and river trips some of the ways to take in the place properly. Indeed, all these Kentish towns have their fair share of activities… perhaps you’ll want to go for a day's surfing in Broadstairs (30 minutes) or venture into Canterbury (half an hour) to see a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the famed cathedral. Its medieval core has a good bit of history, as do Dover Castle (20 minutes) and Leeds Castle (50 minutes). For those of you who have a soft spot for heart-racing spectator activities, Lydden Hill Race Circuit (25 minutes) pulls off some great racing events throughout the year (just check the calendar in advance). However, in Betteshanger Park (10 minutes), you’ll be the one taking charge, as this country park has cycling trails or mountain biking courses for beginners or pros.
